CSU’s Perry and Carlisle earn SIAC honors

WILBERFORCE — For the second week in a row, Central State earned weekly honors from the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference as Kourtni Perry was selected as Player of the Week and LaKayra Carlisle was tabbed Newcomer of the Week.

Perry, who was selected to the SIAC All-Preseason Team, appeared in one game last week, recording 18 points and 11 rebounds in Central State’s 89-81 win over Slippery Rock last Saturday. Perry, a 6-foot-2 senior from Columbus, was 7-of-12 from the field against SRU. Perry’s conference recognition gives CSU back-to-back SIAC Player of the Week honors. Teammate Jordyn Bond earned the same distinction last week.

Carlisle contributed 14 points and 4 assists against Slippery Rock. Carlisle, 5-10 a junior from Detroit, Mich., was 5-of-7 seven from the field, including four 3-pointers. The JuCo transfer from Owens Community College led a CSU bench that combined for 44 points in Saturday’s victory.

Demmings, Vogelpohl recognized by Horizon League

INDIANAPOLIS — The Wright State women’s basketball team swept the Horizon League weekly awards for the week ending Nov. 29 as Kim Demmings was selected as the Player of the Week for the second straight time while Emily Vogelpohl was chosen as the Freshman of the Week.

Demmings (Richmond, Ind.) averaged 23 points per game in shooting 44 percent from the field in four games. In a 106-72 home win over Southeastern Louisiana on Nov. 23, she scored 18 points and added four steals and three assists.

In the opening game of the Lone Star Showcase in Cedar Park, Texas, against #25/21 Iowa on Nov. 26, Demmings had 28 points with eight rebounds and then had 14 points the following day as the Raiders defeated Houston 75-61.

Demmings then saved her best for last as she led WSU to a 77-71 upset of no. 24/23 George Washington in the final day of the Lone Star Showcase on November 28. She scored a season-high 32 points, 21 of those coming in the second half and 14 in the fourth quarter as the Raiders outscored the Colonials 29-16 in the final period.

The 32 points are the fifth-highest total ever for Demmings in a game and are the most since she scored 36 at Oakland on Feb. 18, 2014.

Through Sunday’s games, Demmings leads all of Division I with 196 points and is seventh is scoring average at 24.5 points per game.

Vogelpohl (Cincinnati McAuley) averaged 15 points per game during the same stretch along with four rebounds, 3.8 assists and 3.8 steals. She had 17 points, including four three-pointers, against Southeastern Louisiana with five assists and five steals.

Against Iowa, Vogelpohl had 15 points, five steals and three assists and followed that with 11 points versus Houston.

In the upset of George Washington, Vogelpohl scored 17 points and added seven rebounds and three assists. For the season, she is averaging 10.9 points per game along with four rebounds and 3.9 assists while shooting 39 percent from the field and 82 percent at the foul line.

Raider women upset no. 24 George Washington

CEDAR PARK, Texas — Down as much as 16 in the first quarter, the Wright State women’s basketball team rallied in the second half to upset no. 24/23 George Washington 77-71 in the final game of Saturday’s Lone Star Showcase.

It is just the second win over a ranked team in the history of the WSU program, the other being a 73-70 decision over #16 Green Bay at the Wright State Nutter Center on Jan. 25, 2003.

Wright State shot 46 percent from the field in the second half, including three of six three-pointers, and made all seven free throw attempts while George Washington shot just 25 percent overall, missed all 10 of its three-point tries, and was seven of 11 at the stripe. The Raiders also led in points in the paint (34-30) and points off of turnovers (17-7).

Kim Demmings led all scorers with a season-high 32 points, with 14 coming in the fourth quarter and 21 in the second half. The 32 is the fifth-highest total for the senior guard in her career and the highest since she had 36 at Oakland on Feb. 18, 2014.

Vogelpohl tied a season-high with 17 points and had seven rebounds while Hayes had 14 points and seven points and van der Keijl chipped in 12 rebounds.

Kelli Prange led George Washington (5-2) with 19 points off the bench while Jones, coming off of a 23 point, 26 rebound performance in a double overtime win against Iowa on Friday, posted a double-double of 17 points and 19 rebounds and Caira Washington had 14 points.

Wright State (6-2) will now play seven of its next eight games at home, starting on Friday, Dec. 4, with a 5 p.m. contest against the Butler Bulldogs. That will be the first game of a doubleheader as the WSU men’s team takes on Georgia State at 7:30 p.m.

CSU wins over Slippery Rock

WILBERFORCE — Opening the first four games of the year on the road, the Central State women’s basketball team finally played on their home floor and were successful with an 89-81 victory, Saturday, over Slippery Rock University.

Kourtni Perry led CSU with 18 points to go along with 11 rebounds. LaKayra Carlisle finished with 14 points and Shannon Defoe had 13 to lead a CSU bench that combined for 44 points compared to just 16 from Slippery Rock.

Slippery Rock’s Lexi Carpenter finished with a game-high 23 points, but it was not enough as her team fell to 4-3 on the season.
