BELLBROOK — David Vine was a tad jittery before making his first varsity start as the Bellbrook quarterback.

“The nerves were insane,” he said.

Perhaps he should be this nervous every week. The 5 foot, 10 inch senior scored on touchdown runs of 26, 8 and 2 yards as the Golden Eagles beat Waynesville 26-21 in a Southwestern Buckeye League crossover game Friday. Unofficially Vine ran 27 times for 103 yards and along with bruising running back Connor Oldham (95 yards) kept the offense moving.

“The senior linemen stepped up and played an awesome game,” Vine said. “The linemen made huge holes. Connor Oldham ran the ball really well.”

The defense also played really well. Unofficially the Bellbrook defense allowed just 201 total yards, 94 rushing and 107 passing. The defenders limited big plays and didn’t allow Waynesville to sustain many long drives. Most importantly, the defensive play allowed the offense to stick to its game plan.

“A lot of the things we’re doing are designed for (Vine),” Bellbrook Coach Kevin Basinger said.

Vine’s 8-yard TD rumble gave the Golden Eagles a 7-0 lead with 9:17 left in the first quarter. The offense was set up by linebacker Tom Orbash, who intercepted a pass to the Waynesville 45 on the game’s second play. Following a pass interference penalty on Bellbrook’s first play Vine and Oldham alternated carries to move the final 30 yards.

Bellbrook went up 14-0 with 11:52 in the half thanks to the defense. Drew Ashurst made contact with the Spartans QB on a sack attempt, forcing a fumble. Rye Bennett picked it up and ran 12 yards for a TD.

It appeared the game would turn into a blowout but the Golden Eagles offense sputtered in the second quarter.

The Spartans cut it to 14-7 with 7:54 left in the half when QB Logan Bloom found Logan Fruhwirth open in the end zone for a 28-yard score.

Bellbrook went up 20-7 with 9:04 left in the third quarter on Vine’s 26-yard run. A 15-yard punt by the Waynesville punter gave Bellbrook the ball at the 26.

Waynesville had a one-play drive of its own a few minutes later as Bloom scored on a 10-yard run with three minutes left. A bad snap by the Golden Eagles on a third down play from the Bellbrook 36-yard line was recovered by Waynesville on the 10.

Vine’s third TD with two minutes left gave the Golden Eagles a 26-14 lead. Waynesville scored with 1:07 left, but Bellbrook’s Nick Barhorst recovered the ensuing onside kick.

“A little shaky,” Basinger said. “We are a really young, inexperienced team. I think we got a little too high, started making some mistakes. We’ve kind of made a habit of it, winning ugly.”
