WSU women defeat Richmond

SAVANNAH, Ga. — The Wright State women’s basketball team defeated Richmond, Nov. 23, in the final day of the Savannah Invitational, 85-69.

The Raiders (4-2) scored 22 first-quarter points while holding the Spiders to 14 points. Emily Vogelpohl scored eight points as Chelsea Welch added six and Lexi Smith posted four points and four rebounds.

At halftime, Wright State was up 45-21 with Vogelpohl still leading with 13 points and six rebounds. The Raiders ruled the boards (33-26 overall) after shooting 47 percent in the second period.

WSU led 65-51 as Vogelpohl had 18 points and nine rebounds to lead the Raiders after three periods.

The Raiders shot 45 percent from the field, hitting six threes and winning the rebound battle, 52-39. Welch was named to the all-tournament team.

Raider women fall to Providence

SAVANNAH, Ga. — Junior Chelsea Welch collected her 1,000th career point in Wright State’s 74-69 women’s basketball loss to Providence, Nov. 22, in the Savannah Invitational. Welch, who played her freshman and sophomore years at Pittsburgh, finished with 24 points, and Lexi Smith tossed in 15 points to go with 10 rebounds. Emily Vogelpohl had seven points scored and eight rebounds and Mackenzie Taylor finished with 12 points.

Xenia opens Hoops Classic

HILLSBORO — The Xenia High School boys basketball team will open its season with a 9 p.m. contest on Friday, Dec. 1 in the Ohio Valley Hoops Classic. The Buccaneers will take on Cincinnati Princeton at Southern State College’s Patriot Center.

Princeton features Syracuse University signee Darius Bazley, the top ranked senior in Ohio and the No. 9 rated senior in the country according to ESPN.

Tickets are $10 and include three games that evening. Wilmington plays Campbell County Ky. in the game preceding Xenia. Tickets are available at the door or on the ohiovalleyhoopsclassic.com website.

XHS Athletic Hall inductees named

XENIA — David Adkins, Mike Anderson, Peanut Bottorff, John Cowens, Terry Hedges, Tom Hudson, Skip Smith, Paul Storey, Mark Wingard and the 1965 XHS cross country team will make up the 2017 class of the Xenia High School Athletic Hall of Fame induction class.

The 2017 class marks the seventh to be inducted into the Xenia Hall of Fame.

The six athletes, coach, two contributing community members and the 1965 cross country team will be recognized during the Xenia High School boys basketball game against Stebbins, set for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off Friday, Dec. 8 at the high school.

An induction ceremony will take place starting at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 9 at the Faith Community Methodist Church, 100 Country Club Dr., in Xenia. The Xenia community is invited to attend. Call Gregg Cross at 937-372-5417 before Friday, Dec. 1 to make your reservations.

Bucs in Flyin’ to the Hoop

DAYTON — Xenia High will be among the area and national teams participating in the annual Flyin’ to the Hoop Invitational basketball showcase event.

The Buccaneers, led by junior Samari Curtis who is considered by the tournament as the pre-season fourth ranked junior in Ohio, are scheduled to play Olentangy Liberty at 1:15 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13 at James S. Trent Arena, in Kettering.
