BEAVERCREEK — There’s a pizza parlor somewhere that is going to be very busy on Monday.
Beavercreek’s defense shutout visiting Miamisburg, while quarterback Cody Hocker scored all three of the Beavers’ touchdowns, in a 21-0 win Friday Oct. 20 at Frank Zink Field.
Coach Nic Black said he always awards the defense pizzas while the team will be looking at game films on Monday.
“Every time we throw a shutout, I just know that it costs me pizza,” Black said with a smile. “These kids might not even know that.”
The defense had limited Miamisburg (4-5) to 38 yards in total offense in the first half, and 145 yards for the entire game.
According to the Greater Western Ohio Conference’s website, Friday’s shutout is Beavercreek’s first against a fellow GWOC opponent since Nov. 1, 2013 when they blanked Fairmont 28-0 on Zink Field. The last time the Beavers (6-3) had shutout any opponent was last season, a 14-0 non-league home win over Carroll on Sept. 2, 2016.
Meanwhile, Beavercreek’s running game was chugging along nicely.
Hocker rushed for 75 yards and his TD runs of 4, 48 and 1 yards, Kaden Wenger finished with 72 hard-earned inside yards on 23 carries, and Drew Nanda earned most of his game-high 86 yards (on a dozen carries) on speedy bursts around the outside of the Vikings defensive line.
Unofficially, Beavercreek gained 249 yards on the ground. Hocker completed two of five pass first-half passing attempts for 26 yards as well. The Beavers didn’t pass in the second half. Didn’t need to.
The lone first-half score came on Beavercreek’s longest drive of the half. After 13 plays, Hocker rumbled in from four yards out for the touchdown with 3:04 left in the first half. Cash added the extra point and the Beavers were out in front, 7-0.
Hocker followed a convoy of blockers and weaved his way 48 yards for a score, then a Marcella Cash extra point put the Beavers out in front 14-0.
Beavercreek cashed in on a lengthy 16-play, 81-yard drive to go out in front 21-0. Another Hocker dive into the end zone, followed by yet another Cash kick made the score 21-0, Beavers.
“We played a helluva game on defense tonight,” Black said. “I’m a guy who grew up in Piqua and we played Troy’s Wing-T offense my whole life, and so it’s like a personal vendetta for me to stop it. So I feel very validated when we play well against the Wing-T.”
With the win, Beavercreek keeps its playoff hopes alive. They close out the regular season on Friday, Oct. 27 at Centerville. Miamisburg entered Friday’s game as the No. 12 rated team in the region. Friday’s loss will make it difficult for the Vikings to earn enough points to get into the postseason. Miamisburg plays at Northmont on Oct. 27.
