Indians lose OHC opener

SOUTH CHARLESTON — Noah Meyers earned top honors with a 2-over-par 38, but Cedarville lost its Ohio Heritage Conference season opener by a 176-182 team score to London Madison Plains, Aug. 14 at Locust Hills Country Club. Other Indians scores were turned in by Adam Wood (47), Caleb Smith (47) and Logan Brennaman (50). Cedarville is 0-1 in dual matches, 0-1 in the OHC.

Golden Eagles fall to Valley View

BELLBROOK — A pair of Valley View Ben’s — Ben Herman and Ben Neff — finished 1-2 as visiting Germantown Valley View claimed a 170-190 win over Bellbrook on Aug. 14, at Sugar Valley Golf Club. Zach Crampton and Joey Derrico finished third and fourth overall with respective scores of 44 and 45. Benton Miller shot a 49 and Hunter Turner turned in a 52 in the Golden Eagles loss.

Eaton sinks Bellbrook

BELLBROOK — Fresh off a tournament win in the Northridge Classic, Eaton’s Sarah Willis claimed medalist honors with a 4-over-par 39 at Sugar Valley Golf Club, and host Bellbrook fell to the Eagles by a 170-190 score on Aug. 14. Zach Crampton finished third overall to lead Bellbrook with a score of 44.

Other Golden Eagles scorers were: Joey Derrico (45); Benton Miller (49); and Hunter Turner (52).

Golden Eagles JV falls

EATON — Gabe Hine led Bellbrook’s junior varsity boys golf team with a 52 on the Par-36 nine at Eaton Country Club, but host Eaton finished first, second and fourth overall to claim a 202-217 win on Aug. 14. Bellbrook’s top-4 scorers were: Hine (52); Brodi Vaughn (55); David Duckro (55); and Ryan Cross (56). Eaton’s Adam Webb claimed medalist honors with a score of 47, one stroke better than teammate Travis Pittman.

Fairborn defeats Greenon

ENON — The Fairborn girls varsity tennis team kicked off the 2017 campaign in grand fashion by rolling over Greenon Aug. 11 by a 4-1 score.

Paige Murry rallied for a 0-6, 6-1, 6-4 win over Greenon’s Shelby McHenry at first singles; McKayla Lyons out-lasted Jasmine Esterline 7-6, 7-5 at No. 2. A few minutes later, Amanda Wilson completed a 6-4, 6-4 win over Madie Reed.

Juniors Tiana Thomas and Rita Chien teamed up for a 6-0, 6-1 win over Madie Ritch and Alex Mercuri at No. 1 doubles. Greenon only had 5 players eligible to play so Abby Lafferty and Katelyn Byczkowski won their varsity debut at No. 2 doubles by default.

Fairborn opens the season 1-0 and avenges a hard-fought 3-2 loss from last year. Next up for the Skyhawks is their home opener against the Huber Heights Wayne Warriors on Monday night.

Indians 8th at Ridge Classic

DAYTON — Noah Meyers finished eighth overall with a score of 83 and the Cedarville High School boys golf team placed eighth out of the 13 schools involved in the 38th annual Ridge Classic golf tournament, held Aug. 11 at Kitty Hawk Golf Course. Sarah Willis, of Eaton, won the tournament with a 74.

Other scorers for Cedarville were shot by Jadon Horsley (100), Caleb Smith (98), Logan Brennaman (105) and Mitch Rogers (126). Adam Wood also played for the Indians, but did not receive a score.

Bellbrook placed ninth overall, with Zach Campton leading the Golden Eagles with a score of 85. Joey Derrico (95), Hunter Turner (109), Benton Miller (102), Ryan Wehner (116) and Ryan Cross (116) scored for Bellbrook.

Skyhawks fall to Dayton Christian

DAYTON — Tanner Souders led the Fairborn boys golf team with a nine-hole score of 46, Giana Pico was next with a 47,

Adam Pelfrey scored a 50 and Trey Boedicker finished with a 51, but host Dayton Christian handed the Skyhawks a 188-194 loss, Aug. 11.

Bucs hosting Fairmont, Thursday

XENIA — The Xenia High School football team will host a jamboree game with Kettering Fairmont on Thursday, Aug. 17 at Doug Adams Stadium. A Freshman game will take place at 5:30 p.m. with varsity action set to start at 7 p.m. A jamboree game is an opportunity for OHSAA-member schools to play a third scrimmage game before the regular season begins. A portion of the proceeds from the game go to the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s Catastrophic Insurance Fund. The jamboree games statewide raise more than $70,000 each year for the fund.

Admission is $5 per person. The game is Xenia’s final scrimmage contest before the season opener, Aug. 24 at home against Beavercreek.

CSU football to host Fan Appreciation Day

WILBERFORCE — The Central State football team will hold Fan Appreciation Day at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 19 at McPherson Memorial Stadium. Admission is free to the public with the gates opening at 12:30 p.m.

Marauder fans will be able to view the 2017 team as CSU competes against in an inter-squad scrimmage. The CSU Athletic Department will supply 2017 football schedule posters to all who attend. Fans are also encouraged to stop by the CSU Sports Information table for details on tickets and upcoming events throughout the 2017-2018 school year.

In addition to the action on the field, the Invincible Marching Marauders will be performing in the stands for the first time this season.

Throughout the event, fans who are followers of the CSU athletics’ official twitter, facebook and instagram accounts will be randomly selected for prizes. Fans must follow CSU on its official athletic social media pages to be eligible to win.

Gathering of the Geezers at Kil-Kare

XENIA — The annual Gathering of the Geezers, old-time drag races, car show, hall of fame awards, and swap meet will take place Saturday, Aug. 19 at Kil-Kare Dragway, 1166 Dayton-Xenia Road. Gates open at 9 a.m. Time runs start at 10 a.m. with racing set to begin at 3 p.m. Tech is closed at 2 p.m.

CINCINNATI — Reds fans can show their school pride by purchasing a special ticket package to celebrate College Weekend on Aug. 25-27 at Great American Ball Park.

HALO 5K Fun Run/Walk set

XENIA — The inaugural Helping Animals Lost & Orphaned (HALO) 5K Fun Run/Walk will be held 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 2 at Caesar Creek Vineyards LLC, 962 Long Road. Check-in and same-day registration will take place at 8:30 a.m.

Fall basketball league at Beavercreek

BEAVERCREEK — The Beavercreek High School girls basketball program will be hosting its 18th annual girls basketball fall league. The games will be played on Sunday afternoons Sept. 10 through Oct. 22. All teams will play seven games on five Sundays with no games Sept. 17-24.

The league will have 12 high school teams ninth through 12th grade. There will be 8-10 girls per team, with only two players from each school on the same team. Learn-To-Row class, Sept. 15-17

MORAINE — The Dayton Boat Club adult rowing program will host its learn-to-row class Friday through Sunday, Sept. 15-17, at the club’s boathouse on East River Road.

The three-session on-water class covers terminology, safety, stroke technique, equipment use and care, and sweep rowing in an eight-oared racing shell.

Sessions are 6-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15; 9-11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 16; and 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17. The course is $100 per person, which is deducted from a rower’s seasonal dues if he or she joins the novice team following the course. Each participant should wear comfortable but not loose-fitting exercise clothes and bring a water bottle, a pair of socks and a small towel.
