WSU women’s soccer announces 2017 schedule

A Las Vegas tournament along with matches against three Mid American Conference teams, national runner-up West Virginia and the Horizon League slate dot the 2017 Wright State women’s soccer schedule as released by head coach Pat Ferguson last week.

Junior forward Aaliyah Patten, a First Team All-Horizon League honoree in 2016, returns for the Raiders along with senior midfielder, Niki Romero, who was named to Second Team All-League, and sophomore defender Andrea Gomez, who was selected to the league’s All-Newcomer Team. Also back are junior midfielder Mattie Cutts, who led the squad with five goals last season, senior midfielder Sarah Colvin, who scored three goals and added four assists, and forward Ellie Ganz, who tallied a goal and three assists.

Weber State: Wright State opens the regular season with the Wildcats in the UNLV Invitational in Las Vegas on Aug. 18.

Nevada Las Vegas: The Raiders face the Rebels in the finale of the UNLV Invitational on Aug. 20.

Western Michigan: Wright State opens the home portion of its schedule on Aug. 24 against the Broncos.

Miami: The Raiders make the short trip to Oxford to face the RedHawks, who were 8-9-2 overall and 5-4-2 in the MAC last year, on Aug. 27.

St. Bonaventure: WSU hosts the Bonnies, who posted a 4-14-1 overall mark and 1-9 in the Atlantic 10 in 2016, in another Thursday home match on Aug. 31. This will be the first meeting between the two schools.

West Virginia: The Raiders open September play on Labor Day at West Virginia. The Mountaineers (23-2-2, 8-0 Big 12) were the national runner-up last season, falling to USC in the finals.

Valparaiso: WSU and Valpo (9-10, 5-4) will play a nonleague match on Sept. 8 at Alumni Field after the Crusaders joined the Missouri Valley Conference over the summer.

Bowling Green: The Raiders head up Interstate 75 for an afternoon contest on Sept. 10 against the Falcons, who went 8-10-1 overall in 2016 and 3-7-1 in the MAC.

Youngstown State: Wright State opens Horizon League play on Sept. 15 against YSU (3-12-2, 1-7-1) at Alumni Field.

Capital: Wright State’s first-ever matchup with Capital will be on Sunday, Sept. 17, at Alumni Field.

Green Bay: The Raiders make the long trip to Green Bay (1-13-2, 1-7-1) on Saturday, Sept. 23, for their first league matchup on the road.

Northern Kentucky: Northern Kentucky finished third in the league standings last season, going 13-6-1 overall and 6-2-1 in league play, they will host the Raiders on Oct. 27.

Milwaukee: The Panthers, who won the Horizon League regular-season title for the 16th time in 17 years in 2016, travel to Wright State on Sept. 30.

Oakland: The Raiders host Oakland (9-10-1, 5-4) on Oct. 7. The Golden Grizzlies are 4-1-1 against the Raiders, with all the meetings coming since OU joined the Horizon League in 2013.

Indiana-Purdue Indianapolis: The newest member of the Horizon League, the IUPUI Jaguars (9-7-3, 3-3-2) host the Raiders on Oct. 13.

Cleveland State: Wright State hosts the Vikings (5-11, 2-7) in the home finale on Wednesday, Oct. 18.

Illinois Chicago: The Oct. 21 matchup is just fourth meeting between the Raiders and Flames, with Wright State taking two of the first three.

Detroit Mercy: The regular-season finale has the Raiders traveling to the Motor City to face the Titans (10-7-2, 6-1-2), who finished second in last year’s league standings, on Oct. 27.

The Horizon League Tournament begins with the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds hosting the No. 5 and No. 6 seeds on Oct. 30. The top seed will host the semifinals on Nov. 2 and the finals on Nov. 4.
