Soggy G-MAC tourney resumes Friday

XENIA — Thursday’s scheduled Great Midwest Athletic Conference Softball Championship games were postponed due to the rainy weather.

The tournament had been moved up one day to Wednesday in order to try and beat an oncoming weather front, and the first four scheduled tournament games were played on the Athletes In Action Sports Complex softball diamonds.

In Wednesday’s action, top-seeded Cedarville defeated No. 6 seed Malone, 3-2 in eight innings. Game Two saw No. 2 seed Kentucky Wesleyan defeat No. 5 Ursuline, 5-3; defending G-MAC champion and third seed Trevecca Nazarene shut out No. 4 Davis & Elkins, 5-0; and then Malone defeated Ursuline in a consolation game, 4-2.

Thursday’s steady rain prevented second-round games from getting under way, and five games are now on tap for Friday May 5.

By virtue of having the highest seed from a losing first-round team, Davis & Elkins will face No. 1 Cedarville in the second round of the G-MAC double-elimination tournament at 9 a.m. on AIA’s Field Two. Kentucky Wesleyan and Trevecca Nazarene will be playing at 9 a.m. on Field One.

The winners of those two 9 a.m. contests will play each other at 11:30 a.m. on Field One, and Malone will take on the Kentucky Wesleyan-Trevecca Nazarene loser at 11:3o a.m. in a consolation semifinal.

A consolation final, involving the loser of the winner’s bracket final and the winner of the loser’s bracket final, will then determine who will play the winner’s bracket winner in the G-MAC title game.

Should the winner’s bracket winner emerge victorious after that first game, they will have won the title. Should the loser’s bracket representative win that first championship game, a deciding second championship game will be played.

An automatic berth in the NCAA Division II national softball tournament goes to the tournament winner.

According to the conference’s website (g-macsports.com), a game day and start time had yet to be finalized for the championship finals.
