Military Appreciation Night at Bellbrook

BELLBROOK — The Ohio School Athletic Association is encouraging schools statewide “to take part in a statewide Military Appreciation night on Friday, January 20, at 7:15 p.m., honoring active and veteran United States Armed Forces members at athletic contests.”

Bellbrook High School will be hosting a boys basketball contest on Friday night against the Valley View Spartans. We will be admitting all current and retired service members free at the game with their Military ID and be recognized before the National Anthem.

We encourage all students and fans from Bellbrook and Valley View to wear red, white, and blue as a way to show support for our military service men and women.

Golden Eagles fall to Miamisburg

BELLBROOK — Donnie Crouch was the only Bellbrook player to score in double figures with 11 points, in a 62-35 loss to Miamisburg, Jan. 17, in a nonleague boys basketball game. Nathan Cordonnier tossed in nine points while four other Golden Eagles combined for 15 points.

Miamisburg’s Jason Hubard led all scorers with 13 points, Duncan Hall added 12 and Kort Justice finished with 11.

Bellbrook (4-6, 2-4 in the Southwestern Buckeye League’s Southwestern Division) hosts Valley View at 7:15 p.m., Friday, Jan. 20.

Bellbrook girls fend off Hurricanes

WILMINGTON — The Bellbrook Golden Eagles managed to come alive just soon enough to be able to stand off the Wilmington Hurricanes, Jan. 16 for a 32-29 win. Scoring just eight points in the first half, Bellbrook counted on its aggressive defense to put the clamps on in the second half. The Golden Eagles outscored Wilmington in the second half, 24-14. Cassidy Hofacker led the Eagles scoring with eight points. The team played Brookville on Wednesday.

Bucs surf Green Wave

XENIA — Trinity Morton-Nooks scored 18 points, while Xenia girls basketball teammates Jada Wallace and Astella Welsh scored 11 each, in a Jan. 17 over visiting Greenville. In a close contest throughout, the Buccaneers held a 19-14 advantage at the break, and increased that margin by one in the second half for the 45-39 win.

Winners of three straight, Xenia (5-10, 3-5 Greater Western Ohio Conference, American South) next plays at Vandalia Butler at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21.

Patriots beat the Pirates

WEST CARROLLTON — The visiting Carroll boys basketball team turned a narrow three-point halftime lead into a 59-29 rout, Jan. 17, at West Carrollton High. The Patriots outscored West Carrollton 36-9 in the second half.

Eli Ramsey led the way with a team-high 21 points, Matt Cogan came off the bench to add 13, and Jack Seltsam dished out seven assists in the win. Carroll (6-7) gets back into Greater Catholic League Co-Ed play Friday, Jan. 20 when they play at Middletown Fenwick.

Bowlers beat Roger Bacon

RIVERSIDE — Brody Dixon threw a match-best 485 two-game series, while Mitch Weitz (444) and Jacob Schoening (411) also topped the 400 series mark, in Jan. 17’s 2,771 to 2,591 over St. Bernard Roger Bacon.

Carroll is now 8-1 overall, 7-1 in GCL Co-Ed play. The team will next participate in the GCL Co-Ed Tournament, which begins at noon, Sunday, Jan. 22 at Poelking Woodman Lanes.

Spartans best Carroll

RIVERSIDE — Despite Camryn Joseph’s match-best 310 two-game series, that wasn’t enough to enable the Carroll girls varsity bowling team to defeat St. Bernard Roger Bacon on Jan. 17. The visiting Spartans claimed a 1,797 to 1,695 win, with Melanie Petrey’s 300 series leading the way.

Carroll’s girls team is now 2-7 overall (2-6 in league play). They too will be at the GCL Co-ED Tournament at noon, Sunday, Jan. 22 at Poelking Woodman Lanes.

Cedarville sinks Wilberforce

WILBERFORCE — Visiting Cedarville University hit 63.2 percent of its shots (36 of 57) in a convincing 94-78 win over host Wilberforce University.

J.C. Faubion scored a game-high 26 points to go with a game-high 10 rebounds for the Yellow Jackets. Kwenton Scott finished with 19 points, Justice Montgomery scored 17 points, and Easton Bazzoli added 12 for Cedarville (6-11).

In the loss, Arthur Haggard III led Wilberforce (12-5) with 13 points, Michael Forrest scored a dozen points, Demond Parker finished with 11, and Austin Daniels scored 10.

Cedarville is back in action tonight, Jan. 19 with a 7:45 p.m. non-league home contest against Salem International.

According to the Wilberforce University website, the Bulldogs’ next home game will be on Valentine’s Day (Feb. 14) when they’ll host cross-street rival Central State for an 8 p.m. tip off.

Rowing indoor program

DAYTON — The Dayton Boat Club is offering a two-month indoor rowing program this winter for adults looking to burn calories, build strength and endurance, meet new friends, and learn the mechanics of the sport of rowing from professional coaches and experienced rowers.

The program starts with two sessions of instruction 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1, and 9-11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Downtown Dayton YMCA, 316 N. Wilkinson St. To register or to request more information, fill out the online form at daytonboatclub.org/adult-winter-erging.html.

JYSB registrations under way

JAMESTOWN — The Jamestown Youth Softball and Baseball organization will hold registration opportunities for the upcoming 2017 season from Jan. 11 through Feb. 15 for all leagues. A new division, Ram-Ball, will be offered as a way to create interest in baseball and softball for youngsters ages 3 and 4. Late registration will run through March 3, but includes an additional late fee.

Costs are as follows: Ram-Ball (co-ed, ages 3-4) $35; T-Ball (co-ed ages 5-6) $75; 8U Coach Pitch (ages 7-8), 10U (ages 9-10), 12U (ages 11-12), and 15U (separate from OHSAA, season begins after the high school season ends) $75.

Reds Caravan set

CINCINNATI — The 2017 Cincinnati Reds Caravan will make a stop in Dayton from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the National Museum of the United States Air Force on Jan. 28, as part of the caravan’s North Tour.

At each of the 17 fan stops, the groups will field questions and sign autographs while time allows. All Caravan fan stops are free and open to the public, and at each fan stop the Reds will raffle two tickets to the 2017 Opening Day game on Monday, April 3 (4:10 pm) vs. the Philadelphia Phillies.
