Greeneview loses to Mechanicsburg
MECHANICSBURG — The Greeneview Rams playoff hopes took a small hit Oct. 21 after a 40-7 loss to Mechanicsburg.
The Rams (7-2 overall, 5-1 Ohio Heritage Conference) are the projected six seed in the Division V Region 20 playoffs (the top eight teams qualify). There are only three teams not in the top eight that can catch Greeneview mathematically, assuming the Rams beat winless Cedarville, on Friday, Oct. 28. If all three — Anna, Cincinnati Madeira and Blanchester — lose, based on projections by computer points guru Joe Eitel of joeeitel.com, the Rams are in. If any or all win, it would come down to the second-level computer points which are earned when defeated opponents win. There are other scenarios as well, as only four spots have been officially clinched.
Against Mechanicsburg, Greeneview fell behind 34-0 before scoring on a 51-yard pass from Collin Matt to Ethan Bradds in the third quarter. Offensive stats were not available, but Tommy Smith had six tackles and Griffin Mangan five to lead the Rams defense.

Bellbrook knocks off Tippecanoe
BELLBROOK — Bellbrook came from behind three times to beat Tipp City Tippecanoe, 5-3, in a girls Divison II soccer tournament match, Saturday, Oct. 22. It was a minor upset as Tipp was seeded third and Bellbrook fourth. Tipp scored first, but Cassidy Hofacker scored unassisted to tie it. After another Tipp goal, Lauren Chew scored off assists from Audrey Spirk and Sydney Hollingsworth. Another Tipp goal made the score 3-2, but Maleah Miracle scored off an assist from Chew and then Hofacker and Lydia Travis scored to seal the win. Cassidy Bereda assisted on the final goal.
The Golden Eagles take on Carroll for the sectional title at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25 at Xenia. The winner advances to the district final, and will play the winner of the Cincinnati Mariemont-Cincinnati Wyoming match Saturday, Oct. 29 at a time and site to be determined. Mariemont was the no. 3 seed in Cincinnati, while Wyoming was no. 4.
Beavers beat West Carrollton
BEAVERCREEK — The Beavercreek Beavers advanced to the sectional final with a 9-0 girls soccer win over West Carrollton, on Saturday, Oct. 22. The Beavers play no. 5 Sidney, which beat Xenia, 3-2 in overtime, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25 in the sectional final at Clayton Northmont.
The winner plays the winner of the Cincinnati Oak Hills-Milford match in the district final Saturday, Oct. 29 at a site and time to be determined. Oak Hills was the no. 2 seed in Cincinnati, while Milford was seeded 10th.

Late TD beats CSU
FORT VALLEY, GA. — Fort Valley State scored a touchdown with two seconds left to hand Central State a heartbreaking 30-28 loss on Saturday, Oct. 22. The Marauders had come back from a 20-0 halftime deficit to take a 28-20 lead after a 4-yard pass from Lavon Meeks to Darius Meadors early in the fourth quarter. But Fort Valley cut into the lead with a 27-yard field goal with 10:22 left and then drove 65 yards in 14 plays for the game winner.
De’Michael Jackson led both teams with 22 rushes for 116 yards and a touchdown. Meeks finished with 51 rushing yards and 75 passing yards, completing 7 of 13 passes. Kalon Grover had a 19-yard TD catch and Martell Clark returned a blocked punt 7 yards to account for the other CSU points.
CSU runners nab top-10s in SIAC
ROCK HILL, S.C. — Central State University’s Emmanuel Birgen and Cidni Latimer finished the 2016 cross country season with top-10 performances at the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships. Birgen, a freshman from Kenya, placed fifth in a field of 76 runners. He finished with a time of 27:41 in the 8K race. Trey Simmons of Morehouse won the event with a time of 25:32.13. Morehouse also took the men’s team title with a total with 30 points.
In the women’s 5K, Latimer finished eighth out of 69 runners. The senior from Huber Heights crossed the finish line with a time of 21:50.62. Aliyah Howard of Albany State finished in the top spot with a time of 20:42.87. Albany State won the women’s team title with 50 points.

Bellbrook Lions Club basketball sign-ups
BELLBROOK — The Bellbrook Lions Club is holding registration for the Lions Club basketball program for children in fourth through eighth grade. Registration will take place 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1 and Thursday, Nov. 3 at Stephen Bell Elementary in front of the gym entrance. Parents may also sign their children up for the program by visiting the Lions Club website at www.bellbrooklions.org and follow the “Lions Sports” link to basketball sign-ups. The program will begin with practices in December with games beginning in January. Games are 8 am. to 12 p.m. on Saturday mornings at Stephen Bell Elementary.
Clark State to Volley for the Cure
SPRINGFIELD – Clark State Community College will host the Ninth annual Volley for the Cure event, at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26 in the gymnasium on the Leffel Lane campus.
Teams from Clark State, Bobby Fisher Distributing and The Assurant Group will participate in Volley for the Cure. All monies raised are donated to the Breast Cancer Endowment Fund of Clark County. Additional activities include face painting, pumpkin painting, concessions, a 50/50 raffle and a silent auction.
Meet the FHS girls basketball team
FAIRBORN — The Fairborn girls basketball team will be introduced from 5-8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5 in the Fairborn Baker Middle School Gymnasium. The Fairborn Skyhawks youth basketball teams, Baker Middle School seventh- and eighth-grade teams, Fairborn High School junior varsity and the Fairborn varsity team will all be introduced to the public and will demonstrate their skills. There will be concessions available, a 50/50 raffle, prizes and more.
