Angels ascending and descending

“Jesus said, ‘You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You shall see greater things than that.’ He then added, ‘I tell you the truth you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.’” (John 1:50-51)

This is a mysterious section of Scripture at first glance but in reality is rather easy to understand. Jesus is picturing for Nathanael the power of God coming upon Him to fulfill the mission set before Him. God the Father would send His angels to encourage, assist and empower Jesus in His mission. These angels would work behind the scenes in supporting and protecting Jesus to the very end of His mission until “It is finished.” Nathanael would witness this power upon Jesus for His works.

Since we cannot be with Jesus like Nathanael was, to witness all that He is, we turn to the witness of Him in the Scriptures. It is there that Jesus is revealed to us by the power of the Holy Spirit. He becomes as real to us as how Nathanael knew Him. Now, in this day, it is the power of His Word that comes upon humankind and transforms lives. This power brings faith and trust in Him that goes into eternity.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the power that You placed upon Jesus to do Your will in this world. Your work through Him has saved us. As He comes to us through Your Holy Word we are brought to faith.

Indeed, we see in our hearts Your power ascending and descending upon us. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
