FAIRBORN — Fairborn firefighters battled flames engulfing a two-story home on North First Street from approximately 6:30 a.m. until about 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Fairborn Fire Division Chief David Reichert said the home was vacant at the time of the fire and was more than 100 years old. Due to the structural issues within the home, firefighters battled the flames from the outside of the facility, which is what Reichert described as a “defensive operation.” However, Reichert said firefighters still checked for the possibility of occupants from the outside of the structure. The size of the home created hidden spaces for the fire to hide.

The fire load called for the need of additional resources and personnel, so mutual aid from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and the cities of Beavercreek and Huber Heights were called into action.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
