Fairborn swears in new police officer

FAIRBORN — Friends and family members of Ryan Dunlevy gathered in the Fairborn Government Center’s Council Chambers Thursday morning as he was sworn-in to an officer position at the Fairborn Police Department.

Dunlevy started at the department a year ago as an intern before moving up to a part-time jailer position.

“I’m feeling great,” he said. “I’m really excited about the whole situation, having the opportunity to work at such a great place, city and department.”

He graduated from Wright State University in spring 2013 with his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice as well as two minors in sociology and political science. He then continued his education at Sinclair Community College’s police academy, wrapping up his studies in December.

His goals in his new position include helping people, making a difference, giving back to the community and being a positive role-model for the younger generations.

He advises future police officers to keep their goals in mind.

“Keep your head on straight, stay motivated and dedicated to your purpose on why you want to be a police officer,” Dunlevy said.

Fairborn Police Chief Terry Barlow said being able to see Dunlevy’s work ethic first-hand as he handled office-like work as an intern and his ability to deal with the public as a part-time jailer was beneficial in making the decision to promote him.

The Fairborn Police Department included three open officer positions before Dunlevy was sworn-in. The remaining two are currently experiencing the hiring process, and Barlow feels that this is beneficial to all.

“We try to keep as many positions filled as possible because that helps us deter crime and respond to calls in a timely manner,” Barlow said. “Anytime we can bring someone on, whether it’s a replacement or additional position, it’s good for the city and good for our community.”
