FAIRBORN – More than 30 Miami Valley nonprofits are expected to participate in Wright State’s Volunteer Fair, 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11 in the Student Union Atrium.

Now in its fourth year, Wright State’s staff community service group We Serve U will host its Volunteer Fair. We Serve U epitomizes Wright State’s mission to “transform the lives of our students and the communities we serve.”

The fair encourages students to volunteer with an organization that fits their diverse interests or complete volunteer hours for classes or scholarships. Faculty and staff have an opportunity to volunteer and learn about the various needs in the community.

“Nonprofit organizations always need volunteers,” said Joanie Hendricks, data analyst at Wright State and We Serve U co-chair. “Being able to reach such a large audience in a few hours provides a good opportunity for the organization. We have such a variety of talent at WSU that can fill many different needs for the nonprofit organizations.”

“Students are in a position to use their talents to help those in need,” she added.

Participating organizations include the Humane Society of Greater Dayton, Catholic Social Services, Five Rivers MetroParks, Project Read, Clothes That Work, Crayons to Classrooms and Adventures in Movement for the Handicapped.

Limited space is available for nonprofit organizations to participate in the fair. Space is assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis.

“Community nonprofit organizations are always excited to make connections with WSU students, staff and faculty, and we are hoping for a really good turnout so that our community partners will come away from the event with a lot of contacts and a great feeling about Wright State,” said Becky Traxler, We Serve U co-chair.

Hendricks’ favorite part about the fair is meeting the organizations and their representatives.

“I enjoy learning about their organization and talking with them about possible projects that we can work on together,” she said. “I also enjoy the diversity of the organizations. There is such a wide variety to choose from.”
