FAIRBORN — Every year since the 9/11 terrorist attack, The City of Fairborn has continuously remembered those touched by the tragedy of Sept. 11, 2001.

The phrase etched on the city’s 9/11 memorial is:

“We shall never forget. We shall keep this day. We shall keep the events and the tears in our minds, our memories, and our hearts and take them with us as we carry on.”

The City of Fairborn will host its 16-annual 9/11 Memorial Ceremony at 8:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 11 on the front lawn of the National Center for Medical Readiness, 506 W. Xenia Drive. The ceremony is open to the public and nearby parking is available.

The ceremony will include the presentation of the colors by the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Honor Guard, followed by an invocation by American Legion Chaplain Roger Sloan and welcoming comments by Mayor Dan Kirkpatrick. Becka Perales, director for Serco North America and wife of State Representative Rick Perales, is the scheduled guest speaker and will relate her experience involving the grounding of a flight she had boarded heading to Washington DC that was forced by the FAA to land in Morgantown, West Virginia.

Paul Newman Sr. will lead both the National Anthem and God Bless America. The benediction will be provided by Roger Sloan followed by the American Legion Post 526 rifle salute to fallen comrades. The VFW Post 6861 will perform Taps. Retired Sergeant of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department Del Braund concludes the event with bagpipes.

“We’re pleased that former chairman Frank Gilbert has returned to guide this committee which now has ongoing representation from the City, the American Legion, the VFW, and the DFBA,” said Newman, emcee of the event. “This ceremony and memorial hold a deeply rooted meaning for us, we shall never forget.”

The 9/11 Ceremony committee plans the agenda for the annual event and is comprised of the following members:

Chair Frank Gilbert; Co-Chair Newman Sr.; Chamber Representative Matt Owen; Fairborn Police Chief Terry Barlow; Fairborn Fire Chief Mike Riley; Fairborn Parks and Recreation Superintendent Alicia Eckhart; Fairborn Public Relations Specialist Katie Lewallen; and representatives from the American Legion Post 526, VFW Post 6861, Calamityville, and the Downtown Fairborn Betterment Association.
