KETTERING — The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office identified the individual shot Aug. 27 by a Kettering police officer as 33-year-old Jason Hoops. His last known address was in Fairborn, according to the Coroner’s office.

According to the Kettering Police Department Facebook page, Officer Jonathan McCoy conducted a traffic stop approximately 6:36 p.m. at Craig Drive and E. Bataan Drive and found the vehicle occupied by three individuals, including Hoops. The Facebook post said McCoy observed Hoops to be in possession of a handgun.

By 6:38 p.m., McCoy had requested additional officers. One minute later, the Facebook post said McCoy called out “shots fired” and requested medics.

Witnesses told our news partners at WDTN that the two other individuals inside the vehicle, a man and a woman, when Hoops stepped out of the van, according to area residents. WDTN reported that officials said Hoops refused to drop his gun despite orders from officers adding that when the suspect didn’t listen, the officer shot him. WDTN reported that first responders performed CPR on the suspect, according to witnesses.

At 6:40 p.m., according to the Facebook post, Kettering dispatch asked McCoy if he was okay.

“I’m okay, one down, he still has a firearm in his pocket,” McCoy said.

Backup officers arrived at 6:41 p.m. and started performing first aid until medics from the Kettering Fire Department arrived, the Facebook post said.

Hoops was taken to Miami Valley Hospital, where he perished from his injuries. The other man and woman inside the vehicle were taken away in handcuffs, WDTN reported.

As part of the Kettering Police Department’s protocol, McCoy is currently on administrative leave. The investigation is ongoing. McCoy started with the Kettering Police Department in May 2015 and is a member of the Regional Emergency Response Team.
