BATH TOWNSHIP — Bath Township Trustees got down to business Aug. 16 during a recent regular meeting in which Trustee John Martin read aloud a written report from Township Cemetery Supervisor Teresa Phillips.
Phillips reported that the work crew at Byron Cemetery had begun laying out the area for a new concrete slab around the existing columbarium and the new columbarium which will be installed in the fall. When the project is completed, the crew will be planting a few plants around the columbariums.
Phillips asked for the trustees’ approval to plant two Cleveland Select Pear Trees behind the two mausoleums. Mr. Apple from Strausberg Nursery in Xenia quoted a price of $160 for each tree.
Phillips noted that Apple would not plant the trees until after the first frost. In a 2-0 vote, the township trustees approved Phillip’s request to purchase the trees.
Phillips also reported that three trees planted along Memorial Way in Byron Cemetery had died. She said Jonathan Patterson from TrueGreen inspected some of the trees in the cemetery and said the trees were suffering from apple scab and an insect infestation. He will be presenting a proposal to the township that will include treatment to the diseased trees, along with the new trees that were planted throughout the cemetery last year.
She told the trustees that she highly recommended the treatment.
According to Phillips, a local family is interested in purchasing a two-person crypt. The husband is dealing with cancer and wants to speed up the process. Phillips said the size of the crypt would equal eight grave lots. The township trustees approved the request.
Township Road Supervisor Vern Heizer reported that the township road crew was finishing work on two of the fifteen roads that are scheduled to be treated with a fog seal road application this fall. Heizer noted that the utility company needed to complete the construction on Dogwood Circle before the township could move forward with a chip and seal surface treatment and the fog seal application.
The township board of trustees will meet again in regular session at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30 at 1006 Yellow Springs Fairfield Road.
