City proclaims Sweet Corn Festival Week

FAIRBORN — The City of Fairborn has proclaimed Monday, Aug. 14 through Sunday, Aug. 20 as “Sweet Corn Festival Week” throughout the entire community.

“This is the 36th Annual Fairborn Sweet Corn Festival and we would like to welcome everyone to our fair city,” Fairborn Mayor Dan Kirkpatrick said as he read the proclamation during the Aug. 7 regular council meeting. “The Sweet Corn Festival is a two-day family oriented event where fun and good food are awaiting our citizens and citizens.”

The 36th-Annual Sweet Corn Festival is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 19 and Sunday, Aug. 20 at Community Park, 691 E. Dayton-Yellow Springs Road. It will include its usual festivities, such as live musicians, sweet corn king and queen, vendors, a number of dining options, the big bounce and, of course, plenty of corn.

Sweet Corn Festival Committee Chairman Warren Brown was present at the council meeting to accept the proclamation.

“On behalf of the Sweet Corn Festival Committee, I’d like to thank the mayor, council, the city and especially Alicia Eckhart (Fairborn Parks and Recreation superintendent),” Brown said. ” … I welcome you all to come out.”

The “corny” items include the steam engine — slated to arrive at Community Park Friday, Aug. 18 — corn eating contest and corn chucking. It will additionally remain the golden star of the show as far as a food options at the festival are concerned. It is co-sponsored by the Fairborn Lion’s Club and Fairborn Art Association.

“The Fairborn Sweet Corn Festival is an event that makes Fairborn famous,” Kirkpatrick said during the proclamation. ” … [I] urge all citizens to partake in the scrumptious delicacies, wonderful activities and entertainment scheduled.”
