Diaper Derby among fair highlights

XENIA — Horses won’t be the only ones racing at the Greene County Fair this year.

The fair is holding its first Diaper Derby Contest 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 2 in the Assembly Building.

Babies must be 13 months and under and crawling. A baby that takes one walking step during the race will be congratulated but will be disqualified.

The baby that crosses the finish line first will be declared the winner.

“That’s going to be a lot of fun,” said Fair Secretary Esther Pierson. “It’s going to be just hilarious.”

A pre-registration entry form is required and is available in the Administration Office prior to the event. Entries close 12 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 2. An overall prize will be awarded to the grand prize winner, toys will be awarded to top finishers in each heat and participation toys awarded to all participants.

Greene Memorial Hospital and Soin Medical Center are sponsoring the race and have donated all the prizes.

Other highlights include the Showman of Showmen 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 3.

The contestants travel from barn to barn to show six species including horse, hog, sheep, goat, dairy and beef. With each species, the handlers participate in a real show, complete with formations and questions specific to each animal. To be eligible for the competition, contestants must have won a past senior showmanship event for one of these animals.

Animal sales begin with the market turkeys and chickens 4 and 5 p.m. Aug. 3 and continue with market hogs around 6:30 p.m. Aug. 3. A plethora of sales take place Friday, Aug. 4 including market beef, feeder calves and dairy feeders (4 p.m.), market meat rabbits (6:30 p.m.), market goat and sheep (7 p.m.).

Monday, July 31 is Military Discount Day, when anyone showing a military ID gets in for $3. Family Day/Food Pantry Discount Day is Wednesday, Aug. 2. Anyone bringing a non-perishable food item gets in for $3. Aug. 3 is Senior Citizen Discount Day. Seniors get in for $3.

The entertainment schedule is jam-packed and the rides and games — a popular area for kids — open 4 p.m. Monday, July 31.

“We’re excited,” Pierson said. “We’re hoping that the entire area will come help us celebrate our 178th Greene County Fair and keep it alive.”

Pierson said some Ohio county fairs are having trouble with sustainability.

“We want to keep ours going,” she said.

There are no major rules changes for 2017, however attendees are being asked to keep strollers out of the barns and continue to use common sense when touching animals. They are asked to wash hands after handling any animal.

Because of the precautions taken in Greene County, it is unlikely any sick animals make it on the property. But there is always a chance, Pierson said.

“I know there is a thing about the hogs getting sick at other fairs,” Pierson said. “We have the greatest vets in the entire world here. No animal every steps foot on this ground until its vet checked.”
