Shawnee students collect pennies for Humane Society

XENIA — Shawnee Elementary students recently conducted a penny drive and collected $294.10 in support of the Humane Society of Greene County.

Shawnee Principal Scott Poole, along with a few of the students, presented the check to Gail Schikora of the Humane Society.

“The students worked hard to collect thousands of pennies and we are truly honored to be the recipient of their efforts,” said Schikora.

As a nonprofit volunteer organization, the Humane Society depends on donations to support their programs, which include maintaining a pet food pantry for low income families, responding to calls concerning potential livestock neglect and offering low cost spay/neuter programs to Greene County pet owners.

There are two spay/neuter programs. The first is for low to medium level income residents who, after a small copayment, receive a certificate allowing them to have their cat or dog spayed or neutered at a participating veterinarian’s office. The second is a monthly spay/neuter cat clinic available to anyone, regardless of income level, caring for outside stray or barn cats. The cost is $15 for males and $20 for females. In 2016, 1,632 cats and dogs were spayed/neutered through these programs.
