FAIRBORN — Thomas Smith was treated by local medics for non-life threatening injuries after being stabbed March 26 in the Fairborn Hotel and Inn parking lot, according to the Fairborn Police Department.

The suspect, Jorge P. Ramirez, 34, is currently in custody for felonious assault.

Fairborn Officers were on routine patrol March 26 when they heard a disturbance at the Fairborn Hotel, located on the 800 block of North Broad Street, approximately 1:51 a.m. involving a number of individuals.

Reports state that Ramirez and Smith became involved in a physical altercation after a disagreement occurred regarding a security deposit for a party room at the hotel in which comments about race were made. Information conflicts among a witness and Ramirez relating to the exact comments.

Police statements said Ramirez ended up on the ground during the altercation, but conflict again concerning whether he tripped or was pushed. While Ramirez was on the ground, witnesses said he stabbed Smith in the leg before leaving the scene, which is when officers arrived at the hotel.

When officers reached the scene, they said Ramirez smelled of alcohol and was walking toward the police cruiser but stopped after officers instructed him to do so. Ramirez was then frisked and put in the back of the cruiser. Officers then started gathering witness statements from one individual who was allegedly involved, other individuals who saw the incident from a nearby location and Ramirez; the officer narrative said Smith was too intoxicated at the time to provide a statement.

According to police, Ramirez said he did not have a knife, while witnesses said they saw him throw it into a grassy area near the hotel. The Fairborn Police Department’s K-9 Unit was deployed, in which he located the knife near a bush. The knife did not contain blood, but a substance on the grip of the handle, according to police.

Police said Ramirez was processed at the Fairborn Jail and was later transported to the Greene County Jail, where he remains.
