MIAMI VALLEY — Ghosts, witches, zombies and monsters found only under beds will fill the streets in the coming days — perhaps a few princesses, pirates and cartoon characters will make an appearance as well.

But not to worry, they mean no harm. They’re simply collecting candy as communities in Greene, Clark and Montgomery counties are hosting trick or treating, or beggars night.

The following communities will host trick or treating 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29: Cedarville, Enon, New Carlisle, Springfield.

The following communities will host trick or treating 6-8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 31: Beavercreek, Beavercreek Township, Bellbrook, Dayton, Fairborn, Huber Heights, Sugareek Township, Waynesville, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Xenia, Xenia Township, Yellow Springs.

Other treat options

Trunk or treat events offer trick or treating activities within a confined setting. Specific details of trunk or treat events will vary according to the host, but the overall idea is allowing trick or treaters to collect candy from parked cars within a range of a parking lot. The following are local trunk or treat options:

– Beavercreek Church of the Nazarene, 1850 N. Fairfield Road in Beavercreek, offering candy collecting, hayrides, a bonfire and more 5-7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30.

– Mack Memorial Church of the Brethren, 1717 Salem Avenue in Dayton; 4-6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29.

– Fall Harvest Festival at Kettering Field, 444 North Bend Boulevard in Dayton, offering face painting, prizes and candy collecting; 6-8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 31.

– Fairmont Presbyterian Church, 3705 Far Hills Avenue in Kettering, offering candy collecting, warm drinks and treats and a costume contest; 4-5:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29.

– Aqua-Tots Trunk or Treat, 716 N. Main Street in Springboro, offering door prizes, face painting, crafts, games and candy collecting; 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29.

– Town and Country Shopping Center, 300 East Stroop Road in Kettering, is offering indoor trick or treating, in which costumed children can collect candy from Orange Leaf Kettering, Griffin and Co., Roderer Shoe Center, New Balance Dayton, Artisans, Cheryl’s Cookies and Brownies, DeClark’s Hallmark Gold Crown, Trader Joe’s and What’s Poppin’. Griffin and Co. will also collect various food items to fight against local hunger. The event takes place 6-8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 31.

Safety tips

The real dangers of beggars night may not be the monsters roaming the streets whatsoever. The following are safety tips to be utilized before, during and after trick or treating:

– Plan a trick or treating route before hitting the streets.

– Carry a flashlight.

– Dress candy collectors in flame-resistant and light reflective costumes. Reflective tape on costumes may be a solution.

– Avoid masks that cover the eyes; use face paint instead.

– Trick or treaters should approach homes with a lit porch light.

– Motorists should be aware of an increased volume of pedestrians during trick or treating hours and should drive slowly.

– Walk on sidewalks and look both ways before crossing the street. In addition, cross streets at corners.

– Instruct children to accept candy from outside of homes; don’t go inside a stranger’s home.

– Inspect candy before consumption.
