FAIRBORN — During National Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, Wright State Physicians Surgical Oncology is encouraging women to talk to their doctors about breast cancer and mammograms.

Breast cancer is the second most common kind of cancer in women. About one in eight women born today in the United States will get breast cancer at some point.

Wright State Physicians Surgical Oncology has been serving women in the community since 1977. Melissa P. Roelle, M.D., assistant professor of surgery at the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine and director of the High Risk Breast Cancer Center at Miami Valley Hospital South, encourages women to talk to a doctor about their risk for breast cancer, especially if a close family member has had breast or ovarian cancer.

“Many women can survive breast cancer if it’s found and treated early,” Roelle said. “A physician can help decide when and how often to get mammograms.”
