Wright State Physicians Surgery welcomes new doctors

FAIRBORN — Wright State Physicians Surgery welcomes two surgeons, Laura A. Peterson, M.D., M.S., and Joon K. Shim, M.D., M.P.H.

Peterson, a fellowship-trained vascular surgeon, will start Thursday, Sept. 1. She is accepting new patients at Miami Valley Hospital. She also teaches as an assistant professor of surgery at the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine.

She specializes in open and endovascular treatment of aneurysmal disease, lower extremity revascularization and limb salvage, carotid artery disease, hemodialysis access and venous disease. She earned her medical degree from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. She completed a general surgery residency at the Ohio State University and a vascular surgery fellowship at Wake Forest University.

Shim, a fellowship-trained minimally invasive and bariatric surgeon, will start Thursday, Sept. 15. She is accepting new patients at Miami Valley Hospital. She also teaches as an assistant professor of surgery at the Boonshoft School of Medicine.

She specializes in general surgery, bariatric surgery, minimally invasive surgery, robotic surgery, reflux, hiatal hernia and endoscopy. She earned both her medical degree as well as her master’s degree in public health from George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. She completed her residency in general surgery at the University of Massachusetts and a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery and bariatric surgery at Brown University.

She served as an active duty Army surgeon for four years and completed two tours as a combat trauma surgeon for Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. She was awarded the Army’s Meritorious Service Medal.
