BEAVERCREEK — Greene County residents can now visit the new disc golf park at Greene County Parks & Trail’s (GCP&T) Karohl Park in Beavercreek with its scheduled opening of the 18-hole course in late summer or early autumn.

“This disc golf course will be the first at a GCP&T site,” says Greene County Parks & Trails Director Chrisbell Bednar. “Disc golf is a great way to get outside, get some exercise with your friends and family and can be enjoyed by people of all ages.”

Disc golf is a flying disc game, as well as a precision and accuracy sport, in which individual players throw a flying disc at a target. The object of the game is to traverse a course from beginning to end in the fewest number of throws of the disc. In just eight years, the number of disc golf courses has doubled with the game played in about 40 countries around the world.

The course concept began with a visit from Dr. Mark Matheny, an associate professor of biology from Cedarville University. He approached the park agency about adding a disc golf course in one of Greene County’s parks.

Karohl Park was chosen for several reasons.

Karohl Park is located in a suburban setting with easy access to disc golf participants from throughout Greene County as well as offers the topography that makes for challenging play on the course. The course could also be installed with minimal impact on the park site and will require little maintenance or upkeep once installed.

Disc golf can be played by participants of all ages, all skills levels and all genders, she adds.

Although the disc golf course at Karohl Park is open for free to the general public from dawn to dusk seven days a week, several special events are planned.

GCP&T will be hosting youth and adult disc golf camps as well as tournaments at the new disc golf course.
