FAIRBORN — A Fairborn Intermediate School student is facing expulsion after he reportedly had a replica gun in the building.
According to a letter sent from Principal Tammy Gendreau to parents on Sept. 17, the building administration was told that a student had a replica gun last week in a class. After speaking with students, the student did not have the weapon Tuesday but did have a replica last week.
“The building administrators took care of the situation immediately and the student will not be at school pending the investigation and there will be a recommendation for expulsion,” Gendreau wrote. “In our effort to provide the very best education for students, Fairborn Intermediate School is dedicated to maintaining a strong partnership with parents. Key to that partnership is open communication. I will continue to provide information as situations arise.”
In a second reported incident, another student brought an unloaded BB gun to the school and disciplinary action is being taken, the district confirmed Thursday.
Gendreau said the situation serves as “a good reminder to talk with your child about the school and district’s strict rules about not bringing any knives or any weapons to school.”
“This is very important for the safety of all students and staff members in our building,” she wrote. “We regularly train using our school safety plan with our safety staff, teachers, and our school resource officer. We recognize that training pays off in handling situations like this quickly and safely. Again, please make sure that you are having conversations at home and that any type of weapon (whether real or fake) is locked safely and not available to children.”
Gendreau also suggested that as another safety precaution, parents may want to check their child’s backpack prior to going to school.
“As I have stated, I will continue to keep you informed of important issues at our school,” Gendreau wrote. “Our partnership ensures a safe and supportive learning environment in which all students are provided the opportunity to achieve at high levels.”
