Bellbrook has two All-Ohioans

GREENE COUNTY — Senior offensive lineman Alex Mumy was named to the Division III All-Ohio first team offensive team, and Golden Eagles senior teammate Jack Campbell was named to the D III All-Ohio third team defense, it was announced on Nov. 28.

The D-III All-Ohio teams were selected by a statewide media panel.

This season, Campbell had earned all-Southwestern Buckeye League, Southwestern Division team honors as a defensive back. Mumy received first-team all-SWBL Southwestern honors as an offensive lineman and a defensive lineman.

Harris, Becraft earn All-Ohio recognition

GREENE COUNTY — Xenia’s senior wideout Meechi Harris and Fairborn’s senior offensive and defensive lineman Brandon Becraft were both named to the Division II All-Ohio Honorable Mention team on Nov. 28.

The Division II All-Ohio team was selected by a statewide media panel.

Harris was a triple threat to score for Xenia on kickoff and punt returns, and as a talented wide receiver. He averaged 20.6 yards per catch to lead the Buccaneers, 21.6 yards per kick off return. One team (West Carrollton) allowed him to return a couple punts during the season and Harris made them pay: averaging 42.5 yards per return.

Becraft was the leading senior tackler for the Skyhawks with 85 tackles. He recorded 4.5 sacks, forced one fumble and recovered two others.

Fairborn second at Elks Invitational

FAIRBORN — The Fairborn varsity boys bowling team finished second at the Elks Invitational Tournament Nov. 25 at Poelking South Lanes. The Skyhawks led the entire tournament with Centerville close behind, as J.T. Cherpeski were third and Dylan Eichman fifth individually to lead the boys into the Baker round. During Bakers, Fairborn shot a 267, but was unable to maintain the lead over Centerville.

Madison Plains tops Rams

JAMESTOWN — Madison Plains used a strong showing in the Baker rotation to top Greeneview, 1,861-1,680, in boys bowling Nov. 27. Madison Plains led, 1,291-1,202, after the individual rounds and then took the Baker series, 570-478, to coast to a win. The Rams’ Steven Ross rolled games of 193 and 149 to finish with a match-high 342 series.

Lady Marauders nab fourth win

WILBERFORCE — The Central State University Marauders women’s basketball team won its fourth straight game, 87-54 over Fort Valley State, Nov. 27.

With the win, the Marauders improve to 5-2 overall with a 2-0 mark in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. The Wildcats remain winless with a 0-8 mark and 0-2 ledger in the conference.

Central State never trailed in the game, taking a 24-18 lead after the first quarter. The Marauders turned up their defensive intensity in the second quarter to outscore FVSU, 10-0, on points off of turnovers and took a 48-27 lead at intermission.

CSU kept its momentum in the third frame by outscoring FVSU, 22-9. Up 70-36, CSU cruised in the fourth quarter en route to the win. CSU recorded 16 steals and forced FVSU into 27 turnovers.

The Marauders will try to stay undefeated in conference play when they host Lane at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30.

Marauders lose 77-72

WILBERFORCE — The Central State Marauders men’s basketball team surrendered a 14-point lead in a Nov. 27, 77-72 loss to Fort Valley State.

The loss drops CSU to 2-4 overall with a 1-1 ledger in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. The Wildcats improve to 4-3 on the season and 2-0 in the conference.

The Marauders hope to bounce back at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30 when they host Lane College.

Winchester honored by Horizon League

FAIRBORN — For the second time this season, Everett Winchester has been named the Horizon League Freshman of the Week, conference officials announced Nov. 27. He received a similar honor on Nov. 13.

Winchester averaged 9.5 points and 4.5 rebounds during the four-win week for the Raiders. He added five assists as he shot 53 percent (13-25) from the field and 75 percent from the line (12-16) with eight points and five rebounds against Fairfield to end the week, and 18 points and seven boards to start the week against Tiffin. Wright State also defeated Jacksonville and Gardner-Webb.

The Raiders will travel to play at 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2 against Western Kentucky, and will be back home to host Ohio Valley, Tuesday, Dec. 5.

Xenia opens OVC

HILLSBORO — The Xenia High School boys basketball team will open its season with a 9 p.m. contest on Friday, Dec. 1 in the Ohio Valley Hoops Classic. The Buccaneers will take on Princeton at Southern State College’s Patriot Center.

Princeton features Syracuse University signee Darius Bazley, the top ranked senior in Ohio and the No. 9 rated senior in the country according to ESPN.

Tickets are $10 and include three games that evening. Tickets are available at the door or on the ohiovalleyhoopsclassic.com website.

Bucs in Flyin’ to the Hoop

DAYTON — Xenia High will be among the area and national teams participating in the annual Flyin’ to the Hoop Invitational basketball showcase event.

The Buccaneers, led by junior Samari Curtis who is considered by the tournament as the pre-season fourth ranked junior in Ohio, are scheduled to play Olentangy Liberty at 1:15 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13 at James S. Trent Arena, in Kettering.

XHS Hall inductees announced

XENIA — David Adkins, Mike Anderson, Peanut Bottorff, John Cowens, Terry Hedges, Tom Hudson, Skip Smith, Paul Storey, Mark Wingard and the 1965 XHS cross country team will make up the 2017 class of the Xenia High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

The 2017 class marks the seventh to be inducted into the Xenia Hall of Fame.

The six athletes, coach, two contributing community members and the 1965 cross country team will be recognized during the Xenia High School boys basketball game against Stebbins, set for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off Friday, Dec. 8 at the high school.

An induction ceremony will take place starting 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9 at Faith Community Methodist Church, 100 Country Club Dr. The Xenia community is invited to attend. Call Gregg Cross at 937-372-5417 before Friday, Dec. 1 to make reservations.
