Parks offering May activities

FAIRBORN — The spring season is in full swing and the Fairborn Parks and Recreation Division is hosting activities throughout the month to celebrate.

To reserve a spot for any of these programs or to receive more information, get in touch with the Parks and Recreation Division at 937-754-3090. Printable forms for these programs are available at www.ci.fairborn.oh.us. Individuals can register at the Fairborn Parks and Recreation Office, 461 E. Dayton-Yellow Springs Road or the Fairborn Government Center, 44 W. Hebble Ave. Make checks payable to the City of Fairborn.

Fairborn fishing derby

Fairborn locals are invited to participate in its free annual fishing derby. Fish are to be caught and released with no fishing license required to participate. Prizes will be awarded to those who catch the most fish, the longest fish and the smallest fish. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., but the derby will take place 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, May 13 at the pond at Community Park, 691 E. Dayton-Yellow Springs Road. Participation is free and open to all, but attendees will need to bring their own fishing pole and bait.

Passport to fishing class

Young Fairborn citizens who are wishing to strengthen their fishing skills, the city has them covered. It will host Passport to Fishing Class 9-10 a.m. Saturday, May 13, prior to kicking off the fishing derby at the pond at Community Park but meeting at Shelter Six. Up to 40 individuals aged 4-17 years old who participate in the free class will learn how to cast, tie knots, identify fish and more. Preregistration is required at the class only welcomes 50 individuals.

Bird pastels

Students aged 5 years and elder are invited to create spring bird artwork. They will utilize pastels on watercolor paper under the guidance of Terri Perkins, owner of Terri Lynn Art Studio and Gallery. All supplies are provided in the $15 fee. It takes place 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 18 at Terri Lynn Art Studio and Gallery, 415 W. Main St. To participate, individuals must be registered by Wednesday, May 17.

Nature-Inspired Art Class

Individuals are invited to let the local beauty found within Community Park inspire their art. The class, slated for 1-2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 20, is open to locals of all ages. It will start with a warm-up project, followed by a guided hike through the woods to inspire artistic ideas. It will conclude with a self-led art project with assistance available if needed. All supplies, such as paints, pastels, simple canvas and drawing paper, are provided in the $5 fee. Individuals must register by Friday, May 19. Participants will meet under Shelter Three when the event is slated to take place.

Hunters of the Sky Presentation

Bird lovers can rejoice — the Fairborn Parks and Recreation Division is partnering with a Wildlife Ambassador presented by a Five Rivers MetroParks naturalist, who will present some Ohio raptors. Participants will learn of the birds hunting skills and their importance to the natural environment. It is slated for 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 23 at the Fairborn Senior Center, 325 N. Third Street. Participation costs $5. All ages are welcome to attend the program.
