In 1979 Bob Dylan wrote a song titled “Gotta Serve Somebody.” In it the lyrics rolls through multiple occupations, some of perceived importance and others not as important. In the end, he states of everyone: “You’re gonna have to serve somebody.” Dylan may not be the greatest theologian, but he got this one right.

Jesus Christ said in Matthew 6:24, “You cannot serve two masters.” Implied in this statement is that all of us are going to serve at least one person – someone will be our master. We just need to choose who that is going to be. It is not a topic that is up for much discussion as to IF we have to serve somebody but who will it be. It will either be God or another.

America has been built on the ideals of liberty and freedom. Many great men and women through the years, in this great country in which we have the privilege of living, have toiled and sacrificed to help make this country what it is today. As the United States became more and more prosperous, many forgot who we serve that brought the prosperity.

In the Bible, Deuteronomy 8 focuses on what will happen to Israel if they forget the Lord, the One who loves them so, but the One they were also prone to wander from. ‘When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the LORD your God for the good land he has given you. Be careful that you do not forget the LORD your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day. You may say to yourself, ‘My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.’ But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.” (Deuteronomy 8:10,11,17,18)

In our personal lives and as a country, we must remember “who got us here.” We are going to serve somebody so we must choose. If we do not choose, we automatically default to whatever satisfies us the most. Because all of us have sinned (Romans 3:23), we normally gravitate toward those lesser things that hurt us in the end. However, we have a loving and gracious God who wants to give us the true freedom found only in serving Him.

Who is your master? Who or what are you serving? Charles Kingsley once said, “There are two freedoms – the false, where a man is free to do what he likes; the true, where he is free to do what he ought.”

“No one can serve two masters.” — Matthew 6:24a
