XENIA — When the gates open to the Greene County Fair on Sunday, many attendees walking through them likely won’t realize how much work has gone into preparing one of the most popular events in the county.

While maybe they won’t know, they’ll see the end result of those efforts by Fair Board members and other interested parties.

The planning that leads into the 2016 Greene County Fair began just about a year ago. Planning for next year’s fair will begin shortly after the sun sets on this year’s event.

“As soon as the fair is over, we’re thinking about did that work? Should we bring it back? Did it not work?” Greene County Fair Board President Dan Bullen said. “It’s just all the time we’re working on this type of thing.”

The preparation process is extensive and includes everything from securing propane and grease barrels for vendors to cleaning, disinfecting and decorating the animal barns to making sure cleaning and gate crews are lined up. Fair entries, as well as parking and camping lists, have to be entered into computers.

Contracts are reviewed and confirmed. Entertainment acts are booked. Months and weeks go into the process.

“Everybody thinks it just kinda happens,” Bullen said. “It doesn’t just happen. Somebody’s gotta make sure of it.”

All those preparations will come together soon. The 2016 Greene County Fair is right around the corner.
