Glen Helen to recognize Earth Day

YELLOW SPRINGS — Glen Helen is hosting a county-wide Earth Day celebration festival, offering visitors of all ages an opportunity to have fun while connecting with the environment at the Green(E) Fest.

The day includes hands-on activities, live music, environmental and outdoor programming and guided hikes. The event features artisans, educators, community builders and changemakers from throughout the Miami Valley, sharing knowledge and experiences throughout the weekend.

Visit the Glen Helen website for program and hike itinerary and additional information. It takes place 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, April 23 at Glen Helen, 405 Corry St. and is free.

Hikes include the 12-Mile Trail Exploration Hike, beginning 8:45 a.m. and the 4-Mile Trail Hike, beginning 10:45 a.m.

Other activities taking place in conjunction with the Green(E) Fest include:

– Shred-It Recycling Event (10 a.m. – 1 p.m.), perennial plant swap, Paw Patrol pup adoption event, gear swap, Kid Zone and Trailside Museum and the Miami Valley Flute Circle will be available throughout the festival.

– Earth Blessing Meditation: Join in a meditation focusing on opening the heart, healing and the positive consciousness in this space and around the world. It takes place 10-10:30 a.m. at the Vernet Building, rear patio.

– Long Trail Beer Arrives: Besides making tasty, sustainably produced craft beer, Long Trail Brewery has a passion for serving the community. Long Trail purchases during the festival will support land stewardship efforts at Glen Helen. The beer arrives 11 a.m.

– Beatty Station Cycling Tour: Join the Greene County Parks & Trails Sentinels as it celebrates the nature surrounding the paved network of cyclist trails in Greene County. Cyclists will follow the Little Miami Scenic Trail north from Glen Helen to Beatty Station in Springfield. On the return trip, cyclists will have the opportunity to stop at Young’s Jersey Dairy for an Ice Cream Treat. Cycling tour departs 1 p.m. from the Glen Helen Main Entrance, along the bike path/Corry Street.

– Teddy Roosevelt Speaks – National Parks, Conservation and Preservation: Go back in time with Yellow Springs Heritage, visit with Teddy Roosevelt and hear details from his visit to Yosemite with John Muir in 1903. President Roosevelt will share how he and his family felt about conservation and preservation throughout his lifetime and how he saved more than 200 million acres of land for future generations to enjoy. Proceeds benefit Glen Helen and Yellow Springs Heritage. Tickets at the door and online, costing $5. It takes place 1-2 p.m. at the auditorium.

– Glen Helen 5K/10K Packet Pick-UP and Walk-In Registration: Avoid the hustle and bustle on Sunday morning, pick up the packet for this event at the festival. Stop by the 5K-10K booth to complete entries. Attendees can do so 1-5 p.m. at the Vernet Building.

– Rails to Trails: You can hike and bike from the Elroy-Sparta State Trail to the Ohio to Erie Trail, thanks to the Rails to Trails Conservancy. It occurs 1-2 p.m. at the auditorium.

– Heritage of Glen Helen Walk: Step back in time with Yellow Springs Heritage, explore historical sites along the trail, hear stories and view archived photographs. Tickets available online or at the door for $5, from 1-2 p.m. at the Trailside Museum.

– Glen Helen welcomes the Buckeye Trail: Hear the story of Ohio’s 1444 mile trail, reaching every corner of the state, now traveling into the Glen. Follow participants onto the trail and witness the historic moment when the first Buckeye Trail marker is added to Glen Helen. It takes place 2-3 p.m. at the Trailside Museum.

– Be Wild Again: What do you do when you find a baby rabbit? Who do you call for an orphaned songbird? Hear stories, see pictures and learn about wildlife rehabilitation. Learn steps to take to ensure the best possible outcome for injured or orphaned wildlife, presented by Glen Helen Raptor Center Director Rebecca Jaramillo from 3-4 p.m. at the auditorium.

– Heritage of the Glen Hike: Join Yellow Springs Heritage as it explores the contributions of Glen Helen’s rich history, from prehistory through early commerce and education; hear stories of the individuals and families that were instrumental in the Glen’s growth and preservation. Tickets available online or upon arrival for $5. It takes place 3-4 p.m. at the Trailside Museum.

– Glen Helen Impacts, presented by the Glen Helen Association Annual Meeting: Forging a sustainable future, both locally and globally, depends on the research and commitment of universities, ecological educators and other institutions working to build a public base of science-related knowledge. It starts 4 p.m. at the auditorium.

– The impact of the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is likely to be wide spread. Wright State Professor Don Cippollini discusses recent research that suggests the EAB’s appetite is changing. It starts at 4 p.m.

– Participate in hands-on research stations throughout the day, then gather for an interactive program at 4:30 p.m. with Dr. Audrey McGowin of Wright State University to discuss recent research and how to take part in protecting the waters running through Glen Helen and your local community.

– Glen Helen Association Annual Meeting: It gives Glen Helen officials great pleasure to welcome members, new and old, to the Glen Helen Association Annual Meeting, in which participants will elect board members and discuss the status of the Glen Helen Association. It starts 5:45 p.m. at the auditorium.

Volunteers are needed to help the Green(e) Fest take place, as they will assist vendors and visitors, maintain the cleanliness of the event space, and more.
