BEAVERCREEK — Local health and emergency officials formally dedicated and opened an $8.2 million expansion to the emergency department at Soin Medical Center in Beavercreek Wednesday afternoon. The 22,000-square-foot expansion added 12 exam rooms (bringing the department’s capacity to 26 beds), one nurses’ station and supply areas, to the department.

“We are opening after one year of construction a significant increase in size to our emergency department,” said Terry Burns, senior vice president of Soin Medical Center. “We had an emergency department that outgrew our expectations about three or four years ahead of schedule, and we’re growing to meet the demand of the community.”

When Soin, a part of the Kettering Health Network, opened in 2012, directors planned for an expansion to the emergency department in 2017. Over time, however, it became apparent that an expansion was needed sooner than that original date. On the hospital’s opening day in 2012, the department recorded 31 visits and since then numbers have increased, according to hospital officials.

The hospital had been managing patient surges in the emergency department through a “swing area” where it could expand and pull back as patient numbers dictated. This expansion will allow the hospital to maintain those patients in the emergency department area.

According to Burns, patient movement equipment, computer system upgrades, monitoring systems and an advanced supply-handling system were added to the new facility as part of the expansion.

The opening comes as Soin begins work on an additional $10 million expansion project to fill out the fifth floor of the hospital, adding approximately 30 beds and additional therapy space to support the hospital’s joint, spine, hernia and cardiac programs.
