Fairborn ballot decision to be announced

XENIA — The Greene County Board of Elections will announce its decision regarding whether or not the CEMEX property rezone matter will appear on the March ballot during a special meeting, 4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2 at the Greene County Board of Elections Office, 551 Ledbetter Road.

The special meeting comes following a protest referendum hearing that took place throughout the morning and early afternoon hours of Thursday, Jan. 21 after more than 50 of the verified signatures for the petition that allowed the referendum to surface were allegedly false.

Attorneys representing both those who are for and those who oppose the property rezone put individuals on the stand who were responsible for collecting signatures, Greene County Board of Elections Director Llyn McCoy as well as those with signatures that were called into question.

The decision will come from Greene County Board of Election Members Doris Adams and Ann Gerard.

Fairborn City Council elected to accept the annexed CEMEX property from Xenia Township last year, following trustees decision to not rezone the property from agricultural use to mining use.

CEMEX officials have said that the building materials company has a limited future in the area if the rezone does not take place as the company said it needs to access the limestone below, which requires blasting, in order to continue business. City officials have said that waving goodbye to CEMEX would negativly impact the city’s future and economy.

However, individuals living near the CEMEX property have voiced their concerns regarding living around an area where blasting is taking place. They have said that if the property is rezoned, their homes will be damaged, the area would be dusty and polluted, home values will decrease and they will lack peace from living near blasting.
