FAIRBORN — Kathleen Riggs will begin 2016 with the Community Development Department of the City of Fairborn as its new city planner.

She comes to Fairborn after working for nearly a decade as a planner for the City of Dayton.

Riggs began working for the City of Dayton in 2000 as a community service advisor, serving as a liaison between citizens, businesses and community services. She worked with citizens and government to organize and administer community development projects. In 2006, a planner position opened and Riggs felt it was the next logical step with her background in community development and a passion for being a part of the future look of the city.

As part of the planning team, Riggs worked with a wide variety of community groups and city staff to process grants, complete contracts and plan program budgets. Her primary duties also had her collecting, analyzing and interpreting data for planning and community development programs. She interpreted zoning ordinances and prepared reports, plans, maps and strategies regarding land use and regularly made presentations to both the board of zoning appeals and plan board.

Riggs feels that Fairborn has a great history and character, which intrigued her to apply for the city planner position.

“There are several institutional assets, longstanding local businesses and development possibilities that give Fairborn such a bright future,” Riggs said. “Planning is about the community and doing everything possible to provide a structure that supports citizen engagement in order to encourage a strong and cohesive built environment that reflects Fairborn’s character. I want to be a part of that future for Fairborn.”

Riggs earned both her bachelor of science degree in criminal justice and master of public administration from the University of Dayton. She is a member of the American Planning Association Ohio Chapter and Miami Valley Planning and Zoning Workshop Planning Committee.
