City finishing up project

FAIRBORN – The City of Fairborn has been working since 2012 to increase the aesthetic appeal and user-friendliness of nine and a half blocks between the areas surrounding Main Street, Broad Street, Pleasant Avenue and Dayton Drive. The three-phase project is anticipated to wrap up by next year.

“The overall goal is to make our main downtown commercial district more attractive, more memorable and more appealing,” City Engineer Don O’Connor of the City of Fairborn said. “For residents of Fairborn, visitors of downtown … we really want to accentuate our downtown and make it more memorable so that’ll help support the businesses and bring more people downtown.”

The third phase of the project contains a checklist of items such as realigning Main Street to intersect with Dayton Drive at a 90 degree angle, resurfacing the road to include more storm water drainage and improving pedestrian areas, in addition to aesthetic factors, such as adding decorative brick around the intersections, adding lighting fixtures and planting trees.

“If you look at the section between Broad and Pleasant, it’s really going to look similar in the third phase,” O’Connor said. “It’s basically continuing that look, finishing [it up.]”

Phases one and two, which began in April 2012 and completed in September 2012, included construction in seven blocks between Pleasant Avenue and Broad Street. The third and final phase, including two and half blocks between Dayton Drive and Pleasant Avenue, is anticipating a completed design to be in the hands of city officials within the month of October.

City officials are expecting to begin the bidding process for the remainder of the project in January 2016, with construction beginning in the spring months. O’Connor said the project should be completed by the end of October 2016.

“It’s very exciting to be this close to the end and completing that section,” O’Connor said. “With the first two phases complete, there’s a very noticable difference between the last couple blocks that haven’t been completed. We’re very excited to get in completed and have a completely cohesive look downtown. We’ve had really positive feedback from businesses and residents on the first two phases, so we’re very confident finishing this third phase that it’s the look that people like and that they’re looking for.”
