Students taught archery

FAIRBORN – Fairborn High School may offer archery on a regular basis in its future, depending on funding.

Fairborn High School’s life and leisure course, which promotes individual exercises outside of team sporting activities, has offered activities such as golfing and bad mitten in its past, and recently the students participated in archery, which had a good response, according to Health and Physical Education Teacher Jake Dysinger of the Fairborn City School District.

“Students have learned about different styles of bows including the compound bows which they shoot with in class,” Dysinger said. “The National Archey in Schools Program program is a very structured curriculum which focuses on the proper techniques of target shooting so every student can be safe and successful.”

NASP is pushing to introduce the sport into inner-city schools, and Dysinger said Fairborn High School has received positive feedback in including the sport. The school been borrowing archery equipment from Xenia High School during its pilot year. Since receiving acknowledgment that Fairborn students are interested, Dysinger hopes to raise funds for new equipment from NASP.

“Although previously taught before, it has been many years since Fairborn High School students have participated in archery,” he said. “My goal this year was to bring some new things to Fairborn High School that the students have not experienced before. Being certified to teach the NASP program archery was at the top of the list.”

An Archery Club on campus would allow participants to compete at a district, state and national level, in addition to scholarship opportunities, according to Dysinger.

If individuals would like to donate to the efforts or receive more information, they can do so by contacting Dysiner at [email protected].
