Skyhawks lose in home opener

After nearly a week of bad weather had forced cancellation of matches and practices, the Fairborn Boy’s tennis team returned to action on Tuesday night as they hosted Miamisburg in their home opener for the 2016 season. First singles star Nhat Mai remained undefeated on the season, but it was not enough to pull out the team win as the Skyhawks fell 3-2 on a sunny but chilly night at the Fairborn Community Park courts.

Mai cruised at no. 1 singles 6-1 and 6-1 to earn the first point of the night. But before Austin Lewis and Johnny Ngo walked off with their first win of the season at no. 2 doubles by the scores of 7-5 and 6-3, the remaining Skyhawks had gone down in defeat.

Robert Floyd (second singles) and Caleb Arthur (third singles) fell by identical 0-6, 0-6 scores.

The Skyhawks showed some hope at first doubles where Alex Cao and Tyler Fillback lost a tough first set 4-6, but Miamisburg pulled out the second set 6-1 for the win and earned their team the 3-2 overall victory.

“Once again Nhat Mai played an excellent match and really never let his opponent get into the match at no. 1 singles. It has been a pleasure to watch his growth and development the last three years. He has so much fun and works so hard to do well. And that enthusiasm has rubbed off on his teammates as well.” commented coach Doug Coy.

“I was also happy to see Austin and Johnny pull out the win at second doubles. They have worked so hard in practice, and come so close in their earlier matches this season. Tonight they found a new level of confidence on the courts and they also really enjoyed themselves out there. It was really fun to watch them play, and to see the joy they expressed when they did well.”
