XENIA — The season opening Spring Street Car Nationals drag racing event, scheduled for today, April 9, at Kil-Kare Dragway has been cancelled.

“With the impending forecast and cold temps, we felt it best to cancel,” Kil-Kare General Manager and Competition Director Will Tharpe said by email.

Temperatures ranging from 27 to 39 degrees F., with the possibility of snow, were forecast for Saturday.

“The plan is to proceed with the planned schedule of a Saturday Test and Tune on April 16th. Mother Nature is just not ready for us to enjoy our 2016 season! With the forecast showing highs near 70 at the end of next week…. This should be the place to be!” Tharp added.

The Spring Street Car Nationals event was touted as one of the nation’s top “Upcoming Big Bucks Races” on dragraceresults.com. The season opening event at Kil-Kare Dragway was open for street-legal cars that ran quarter-mile elapsed times of 14 seconds and up. Event winners were to receive $1,000.

Tharpe did not rule out the possibility of rescheduling the Spring Street Car Nationals event, but said at this time Kil-Kare did not have an open date where they could reschedule the event.

Kil-Kare Dragway, located at 1166 Dayton-Xenia Rd. in Xenia, has the April 16 and 21 Test & Tune dates up next on its remaining 77-event season schedule. The first scheduled race is an National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Summit E.T. Racing Series non-points event set for April 23.

Today’s Spring Street Car Nationals drag racing event was cancelled because of cold and rainy weather. Kil-Kare Dragway’s next event is scheduled for a Saturday April 16 Test & Tune, which will run from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Xenia racing facility.
