GIRLS BASKETBALL

Bellbrook sets school wins record

LEBANON — A physically strong Dayton Stivers team managed to stay within striking distance for one half, but the Bellbrook girls then pulled away in the second half to defeat the Tigers 66-37 on Saturday to remain undefeated.

The win sets a new record for the Eagles as they have now won 24 straight games, breaking the record of 23 set by the 1990-91 team. The Eagles had their most balanced scoring attack of the season as all 5 starters scored at least 9 points paced by sophomore Cassidy Hofacker with 17. Gabby Ozoude scored 14, Stephanie Dorn added 12 and Bekah Vine and Gabby Boyer with nine, rounded out the scoring. The win propels the girls into a third round match up with Clarksville Clinton Massie, a team they beat by just two points during the regular season. That game will be played at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18 at Lebanon High School.

• Yellow Springs takes on top-seeded New Madison Tri-Village at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16 at Brookville High School.

• Greeneview defeated Lees Creek East Clinton on Saturday. They play Williamsburg at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16 at Wilmington High School.

• Cedarville defeated Cincinnati Christian, 59-25, Saturday at Monroe High School. The Indians take on Miami Valley Christian Academy at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16 at Monroe High.

• Second-seeded Carroll played no. 14 seed Dayton Belmont on Monday night in New Carlisle. No game score was available at presstime.

Boys Basketball

Pats win over Franklin

RIVERSIDE — Carroll closed out its regular season with a 62-50 win over Franklin on Saturday to win seven of its final eight games and finish with a 15-7 overall mark, 6-4 in the Greater Catholic League Co-Ed’s North Division.

Jared Kieninger led the Patriots with 16 points, D.J. Sommers finished with 14 points and Jack Seltsam finished with 12 points, and was a perfect 10-for-10 from the freethrow line.

Fifth-seeded Carroll has a first-round bye in the Division II sectional basketball tournament. They will face either Middletown Fenwick (the 10th seed) or Lemon Monroe (11th seed) at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24 in the second round, at Kettering’s Trent Arena.

Ambassadors win in OT

XENIA — Host Xenia Christian outscored Miami Valley by an 8-6 overtime margin to claim a 74-72 Metro Buckeye Conference win on Friday.

Ashton Burke led the Ambassadors with 20 points scored, David Kingsinger finished with 19, James Brads tossed in 11 points and Gabe Woodard finished with 10 in the win. No statistics were reported for Miami Valley.

Xenia Christian ends its regular season with a 3-17 overall record, and finished 3-9 in the MBC. The Ambassadors have a first-round bye in the Division IV sectional tournament at Troy High School. They’ll play either top-seeded New Madison Tri-Village or 12th seed Lewisburg Tri-County North at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23 at Troy High.

Rams upend Mechanicsburg in OT

JAMESTOWN — The host Greeneview Rams outscored Mechanicsburg 9-6 in the overtime period to claim Friday’s 59-56 win in Ohio Heritage Conference action.

Ethan Bradds led all scorers with 22 points, while Rams teammates Kollyn Brooks and Austin Petry finished with 17 and 13 points respectively. Greeneview (6-15 overall, 5-9 OHC) will begin Division III sectional tournament action after a first-round bye, and will face either Versailles or Arcanum at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24 at Dayton Belmont High School.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

Beavercreek Ankeney repeats as GWOC champs

BEAVERCREEK — Last week, the Beavercreek Ankeney eighth grade girls made it back-to-back Greater Western Ohio Conference tournament championships by beating Lebanon White, Centerville Gold and Springboro Blue. The girls finished their middle school career by going 36-3 and also won the GWOC South regular season going undefeated in conference and only losing one game.

The Chargers were led by Morgan Rhoades in scoring followed by Grace Phillips Gabby Fawley Tiernan McKtrick, and Diana Beningo. The bench was led by Kristi Campbell, Addie Gray, Molly Buckwietz, Ashlyn Wilheim, Abbie Day and Nicole Wienert. The Ankeney girls won 14 of their 18 games by double figures.

Men’s Basketball

Kentucky State outlasts Central State

WILBERFORCE — In the final home game of 2016 and 107th meeting between the two schools, Central State fell to rival Kentucky State, 88-83, on Saturday night.

Tryston Ford finished with a game-high 28 points to go along with seven rebounds. Reggie Breeden scored 16 points followed by 13 from Dorian Jordan. As a team, KSU shot an impressive 54% from the field. With the victory, the Thorobreds improve to 11-10 overall with a 9-6 mark in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.

Sterling Gilmore led CSU scorers with 14 points, converting nine of 10 free throws. The junior guard also picked up a game-high seven assists. Fighting foul trouble throughout the evening, senior Hosie Smith, Jr. recorded 13 points and six rebounds. Tre’ Edwards and Sean Cassidy, Jr. each had 12.

Falling to 9-13 on the season and 7-8 in the conference, Central State hopes to rebound this Thursday when they make the longest trip of the year to Mobile, Alabama to take on Spring Hill College.

Cedarville downs Ohio Valley

CEDARVILLE — Four Cedarville University Yellow Jackets scored in double figures in Saturday’s 77-67 win over Ohio Valley (W. Va.) at the Callan Athletic Center.

J.C. Faubion led the Yellow Jackets with 17 points, Colton Linkous finished with 16, Easton Bazzoli scored 11 points and Patrick Bain scored 10. Cedarville is now 10-13 overall and 3-6 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference.

Ohio Valley’s Allen Markese finished with a game-high 20 points and Darryl Walker finished with 10.

Women’s Basketball

Yellow Jackets roll over Ohio Valley

CEDARVILLE — Kayla Linkous scored 17 points and Christina McQueen scored 11 to lead Cedarville University to a 62-48 win Saturday over Ohio Valley.

Cedarville is now 19-6 overall and 10-1 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference.

Shicole Watts led Ohio Valley (3-20, 1-10 G-MAC) with 17 points.

Marauders swept by Kentucky State

WILBERFORCE — The Thorobrettes of Kentucky State swept the season series over the Central State Lady Marauders with a 56-51 win on Saturday night.

KSU shot 52% from the field compared to a 36% performance from the Marauders.

Shaia Horton finished with 20 points, three blocks and three steals as the Thorobrettes improved to 18-3 overall and a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference West-best 12-2 mark.

Jordyn Bond led CSU with 14 points. Sierra Harley, who suffered a ankle sprain midway through the second quarter, managed 10 points, six rebounds and four assists. The loss drops CSU to a 10-12 ledger with a 5-9 mark in conference play.

Central State returns to the hardwood for Senior Night at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 16 against Salem International.
