Cedarville sinks Salem International

CEDARVILLE — The host Cedarville University Yellow Jackets jumped out to a big 44-28 halftime lead, then fended off a Salem International rally, to claim an 80-77 men’s basketball win Thursday night at the Callan Athletic Center.

Evan Kraatz hit a pair of free throws with 2.6 seconds left to enable the Jackets to snap a four-game losing skid. Patrick Bain led Cedarville (9-13, 2-6 Great Midwest Athletic Conference) with 19 points. Easton Bazzoli (15), Robert Okoro (12) and Kwenton Scott (11) also finished in double figures.

Tyler Bell of Salem International (4-18, 1-8 G-MAC) led all scorers with 22 points scored.

Cedarville hosts Ohio Valley at 4:15 p.m. today, Saturday, Feb. 13.

Raiders fall to Illinois-Chicago

CHICAGO — Wright State shot just 32 percent for the game, 27 percent in the second half, in dropping a 64-59 Horizon League decision Thursday at University of Illinois – Chicago.

UIC hit nine of 18 field goal attempts in the second half to finish at 49 percent overall while Wright State connected on just nine of 34 attempts to end up at 32 percent for the game.

Mark Alstork led the way for the Raiders with 15 points while Michael Karena had 11 along with J.T. Yoho.

Dikembe Dixson paced UIC (4-19, 2-10 Horizon) with a double-double of 26 points and 12 rebounds while Tai Odiase added 18 points.

Wright State (15-11, 9-4 Horizon) travels to league leader Valparaiso for an 8 p.m. matchup Saturday night, Feb. 13.

Women’s Basketball

Yellow Jackets remain atop G-MAC

CEDARVILLE — Host Cedarville outscored Salem International, 24-5, in the second quarter to pull away to a 78-49 Great Midwest Athletic Conference win Thursday night at the Callan Athletic Center on the Cedarville University campus.

Abby Wolford scored a game-high 18 points and was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line. Kayla Linkous also scored in double figures, finishing with 16.

With the win, Cedarville remains all alone in first place in the G-MAC with an 18-6 overall, 9-1 league record. They’re one game ahead of Ursuline College (8-2 G-MAC). Those two teams, plus Kentucky Wesleyan and Davis & Elkins, have already clinched a spot in the 2016 G-MAC postseason tournament, March 3-5, which will be hosted by the league’s top team.

Cedarville hosting Play4Kay game, Saturday

CEDARVILLE — The Cedarville University women’s basketball team will again host a Play 4Kay Game when they take on the Ohio Valley University Fighting Scots in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference contest that is slated for a 2 p.m. tip-off on Saturday, Feb. 13.

The Lady Jackets will be wearing pink jerseys for the game and are asking that everyone attending the game wear pink as well. Fans will also have an opportunity to make a donation as well as a pledge for every three-point basket the Lady Jackets make during the game against the Fighting Scots.

To add to the excitement, The Crown Gymnastics Studio from West Liberty, will be performing at halftime.

Play 4K is an opportunity for a nation of players and coaches to raise breast cancer awareness and funds for research on the court, across campuses and in communities. The official charity is the Kay Yow Cancer Fund in partnership with The V Foundation and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA).

The late Kay Yow, former North Carolina State University head women’s basketball coach, was a past president and founding member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), and a galvanizing voice for the WBCA. Yow was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987, and passed away on January 24, 2009, after facing her third bout with the disease. Yow is a member of the Athletes in Action Hall of Faith and was a bold follower of Christ.

Since its inception in 2007, the Play 4Kay initiative has raised over $5.18 million to support cancer research. All donations from the Cedarville-Ohio Valley game will be sent directly to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.

Baseball

Seymour on the Ashland University team

ASHLAND — Tyler Seymour of Beavercreek, is a member of the varsity men’s baseball team at Ashland University.

Seymour is majoring in finance.

He is the son of Robert and Patricia Seymour of Beavercreek. Seymour is a 2014 graduate of Carroll High School. Seymour, a freshman, is a first baseman and an outfielder for the Eagles.

The Ashland University baseball team competes in NCAA Division II in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). The Eagles are led by head coach John Schaly, now entering his 19th season. The Eagles play their home games at Sarber Athletic Complex. The Eagles baseball team, which finished last season 34-19 and won the first-ever GLIAC South baseball championship, has been chosen to repeat as the GLIAC South Division champions by the 2016 GLIAC Baseball Preseason Coaches’ Poll.
