JAMESTOWN — In a lopsided Friday night loss, Nick Fife and the rest of the Greeneview Rams looked as if they were shooting at basketball hoops with lids on them. Less than 24 hours later, Fife and his Rams teammates couldn’t miss.

Despite the hot shooting touch, Greeneview needed overtime to defeat Ohio Heritage Conference and “Battle of Route 72” rival Cedarville, 68-62, Saturday night in the Gary Bradds Memorial Gymnasium.

Fife canned 12 of his team-high 22 points in the first half, including four 3-pointers, Ethan Bradds scored all but three of his 21 points in the final quarter and the four-minute overtime period, and Austin Petry also scored 11 of his 18 points in the fourth and overtime, to earn the win.

“Guys knocked down shots, Fife carried us early in the game — that was huge — and because of that, we were able to get the ball down inside to Ethan which is what we wanted to do,” Greeneview coach Kyle Fulk said.

Cedarville’s Jacob Gannon put in a layup with 17.5 seconds left in the first half for the Indians’ first lead of the game, 23-22. The two Greene County rivals traded the lead seven times in the second half, and Greeneview led by as much as eight points (54-46) with 2:53 left to play before the Indians tied the game on Gannon’s 3-pointer from the top of the arch with 21.7 seconds left to play.

Gannon finished with 19 points scored. Cedarville teammate Josh Wilson tied Fife’s game-high tally to score 22 points of his own, and Kosi Al Hasan also got into double figures for the Indians with 13 points.

“I felt like both teams played hard, but Greeneview had some kids step up and they had a really good game,” a nearly hoarse Cedarville coach Ryan Godlove said after the game. “The Fife kid, I think those are the most points he’s scored all year, and Bradds played another solid game, not just offensively but defensively, too.

“For us offensively, I think we shied away from Bradds and I wanted to attack him. He definitely upsets a lot of shots from inside.”

“I just felt like we came out with a lot more energy tonight,” Fife said. “We just wanted to beat our biggest rival, Cedarville, and that’s what we did. … I couldn’t have done that without all of my teammates.”

In the overtime period, Bradds opened up the scoring with a pair of free throws with 3:14 left to play. Dylan Lehotay then missed back-to-back free throws, but scored when he grabbed the ensuing rebound to put the Rams out in front 60-56 with 2:56 to go, and Greeneview stayed out in front.

Saturday’s game also showed the spirit of the two neighboring communities as the two raised money for Charlotte Caraway, the 20-month-old daughter of Greeneview graduate Matt Caraway and his wife, Cedarville grad Stephanie (Creamer) Caraway. Charlotte has been diagnosed with bilateral kidney cancer and is presently undergoing chemotherapy to fight the disease.

Organized by Cedarville students Chris Anderson, Elizabeth Daniels and Sidney Ryman, and Alena Clark, Kenzie Cochran and Jessica Wooten of Greeneview, $1,702 was raised through T-shirt sales and fan donations.

The bright blue T-shirts read ‘We write for her fight. #fiercecharlotte’ on the front; and said ‘And though she be but little, she is fierce’ on the back. The family was presented the check during a brief halftime ceremony.

Cedarville’s Kosi Al Hasan (10) puts up a shot during the first half of Saturday’s game at Greeneview High School. Hasan’s score was waved off after the Indians starter was whistled for a charging foul. Greeneview won in overtime, 68-62.
