Marauders unable to keep pace with Pioneers

WILBERFORCE — The Pioneers of Malone University cruised to an 89-68 victory over the Central State Marauders, Nov. 15, in the Beacom/Lewis Gymnasium.

Playing without top offensive player Dwight Richards Jr. and top rebounder Jeremy Brown, CSU fell to a record of 0-3 on the season. Malone improved to a mark of 2-1.

The Marauders opened the night with an 8-2 run, but Malone answered with a 11-0 run to take a 13-8 lead at the 15:29 mark of the first quarter. The Pioneers led from that point forward, increasing their lead to 40-27 by halftime.

Malone opened the second half on a 7-0 run to go up by 20 points. By the 10 minute mark, MU had ballooned its lead to 70-40. CSU fell behind by as many as 35 in the second half as they watched the Pioneers claim an eventual 22-point victory.

The three-point line continues to be an issue for the Marauders. Malone made 15 of 28 shots from beyond the arc compared to CSU’s 8 for 23 performance.

Nate Shepherd converted 10 of 15 shot attempts to lead led the way for the Pioneers with 25 points. Jaret Majestic went 6 of 7 from three-point range to finish with 18 points. Daylan Haynie finished with 14 points and five assists and Ty Jordan chipped in with 12 points in the MU victory.

Junior forward Chris Scott paced the Marauders efforts with 25 points on a 10-or-18 shooting night. Scott also collected a game-high 10 rebounds. Frank Barber III finished his night with nine points, eight rebounds and four steals.

CSU will return home at 3 p.m., Saturday Nov. 18 to play Lake Erie College. Lake Erie enters the game with an overall mark of 2-1.

In the first three games, opponents have combined to shoot 48 percent (42-86) from the three-point line while CSU has made just 25 percent (14-55) from beyond the arc.

Lake Erie and Central State will meet for the first time since the 2009-2010 season.
