Schloss, Beste named to OHC first team

WEST LIBERTY —Cedarville’s Sarah Beste and Greeneview’s Ashley Schloss were named to the Ohio Heritage Conference’s South Division first team in girls high school volleyball, the league announced Nov. 7.

Cedarville and Greeneview each had a representative on the OHC South second team as well: Kalley Schulz of Cedarville; and Greeneview’s Caitlyn Sweat were on the team.

Cedarville’s Sammy Buettell and Abigail Sheridan, as well as the Greeneview trio of Bryce Ratliff, Maddie Hines and Ali Simpson, each received OHC South Honorable Mention honors.

Two Rams on OHC boys soccer first team

WEST LIBERTY — Junior defender Quentin Conley and junior midfielder Trent Green were both named to the Ohio Heritage Conference’s boys soccer first team, the league announced Nov. 7.

The Rams’ senior midfielder Zarek Firman was a second-team selection, while Dart Hovan and Kelle Hart were Honorable Mention selections. Greeneview placed fourth in the OHC with a 2-2-3 league mark.

Rutherford, Maxwell make OHC first team girls soccer

WEST LIBERTY — Greeneview sophomore forward Faith Rutherford and senior defender Olivia Maxwell each earned first-team all-Ohio Heritage Conference honors, it was announced Nov. 7 by the league.

Junior midfielder Kayli Vipperman was a second-team all-OHC selection and freshman forward Josie Faris was an Honorable Mention pick. The Greeneview girls soccer team placed in a tie for fourth in the OHC with a 6-3-0 mark.

CSU Check Tip-Off Classic

WILBERFORCE — The Central State University women’s basketball team will embark on another season of basketball when the Marauders host the four-team Theresa A. Check Tip-Off Classic starting at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11.

Schedule includes: Game 1 — 2 p.m. Ohio Valley vs. Indiana University-East; Game 2 — 4:30 p.m. CSU vs. Salem International; Game 3 — Indiana University-East vs. Salem International and Game 4 — Ohio Valley vs. CSU.

Theresa Check, a legendary athletic administrator and women’s basketball coach in Southwest Ohio, made a reputation for herself as the women’s basketball coach at Alter High School and as head coach and athletic director at Central State University and Cincinnati State Community College. Check has been enshrined into a school or organization’s Hall of Fame on seven occasions. She is a member of the Central State University Hall of Fame, Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame, NAIA Hall of Fame, Cedarville High School’s Hall of Fame, Alter High School’s Hall of Fame, the Greene County Women’s Hall of Fame and Cincinnati State’s Hall of Fame.

Sundell honored by league

FAIRBORN — Joel Sundell of the Wright State men’s soccer team has been named the Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week, conference officials announced Nov. 6.

Sundell, a sophomore goalie from Norrkoping, Sweden, posted his sixth shutout of the year as the Raiders defeated Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis at home Nov. 3. 2-0. He made four saves against the Jaguars.

The Raiders, who have now posted double-figure wins in four straight years, open the Horizon League championship tonight as they host Cleveland State in a quarterfinals game at WSU’s Alumni Field. The winner will play Illinoia Chicago or Green Bay in the semifinals Thursday Nov. 9 in Chicago. The finals are slated for Saturday Nov. 11, also in Chicago.

Bucs in Flyin’ to the Hoop

DAYTON — Xenia High will be among the area and national teams participating in the annual Flyin’ to the Hoop Invitational basketball showcase event.

The Buccaneers, led by junior Samari Curtis who is considered by the tournament as the pre-season fourth ranked junior in Ohio, are scheduled to play Olentangy Liberty at 1:15 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13 at James S. Trent Arena, in Kettering.
