Jackets elude big scare at AB

PHILIPPI, W.Va. — The Cedarville University women’s volleyball team needed to go the distance to outlast upset-minded Alderson Broaddus University in five sets to begin a three-match Great Midwest Athletic Conference swing oct. 19 through West Virginia.

The winning numbers were 25-14, 23-25, 24-26, 25-23, 15-11. Cedarville, 12-11 overall, 8-2 G-MAC, had to dig deep against a Battler squad that entered the match with just one win in 10 conference outings. After getting drilled in the opening set, AB squeaked out the next two, bolted to a 5-0 lead in the fourth set, and led by as much as 11-4. However, the Jackets rallied to take the lead for good at 17-16 en route to squaring the match. CU broke a 7-7 deadlock with three straight points in the fifth set to regain command.

Lady Marauders beat UC-Clermont, 3-1

WILBERFORCE — The Central State University Lady Marauders fought hard in a highly contested 3-1 home court victory over University of Cincinnati-Clermont, Oct. 19.

CSU started the night strong, scoring the first six points of the opening set. UC-Clermont quickly tightened things up and CSU had to fight for a 25-22 victory in the first frame. From that point on, momentum shifted numerous times throughout the evening as each team traded points. The second set lasted 45 minutes with CSU finally putting UC-Clermont away, 34-32, as freshman Michaela Powell picked up back-to-back kills to give her team a 2-0 lead. UC-Clermont edged CSU in the third set, 27-25. CSU appeared to be in full control with a 23-17 lead in the fourth set.

CSU will travel to play at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21 at Urbana University.

CU locks up home playoff game

CEDARVILLE — The Cedarville University Yellow Jackets netted three unanswered goals midway through the second half to defeat Ursuline, 3-1, in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference women’s soccer showdown on Oct. 19.

Cedarville, 10-5-1 overall and 8-3-1 G-MAC, clinched a home playoff game in the first round of the conference tournament on Oct. 28. A sixth consecutive victory for the Jackets appeared to be in jeopardy. The Arrows’ only shot of the first half gave the visitors a 1-0 lead they carried well into the second period.

The team will host Lake Erie College at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21 at the Yellow Jacket Soccer Complex.

Yellow Jackets No. 2 in G-MAC poll

CEDARVILLE — Cedarville has been selected to finish as the runner-up in the 2017-18 Great Midwest Athletic Conference women’s basketball preseason poll presented by Under Armour, Oct. 19. The poll was determined in a vote by the league’s coaches.

No less than seven schools received first place votes with Ursuline awarded two and ending up as the preseason choice to win the G-MAC with 115 total points. The Yellow Jackets’ three top votes were the most earned by any team and they totaled 109 points. Each team in the top seven received at least one first place vote which contributed to the close voting.

Cedarville will play an exhibition on Oct. 29 at Penn State University.

Beginner archery clinic

BEAVERCREEK — Beavercreek Parks Department is offering a Beginner Archery Clinic, Saturday, Oct. 21 at the Wartinger Park Barn. The adult clinic is from 10 a.m to noon, and the family clinic (age 10 and up) is from 1-3 p.m. Youth age 10-17 must be accompanied by an adult 21 years or older.

This clinic is appropriate for beginner archers with little to no experience. A certified archery instructor will teach participants safe archery procedures, basic equipment use, and the basics of shooting a bow and arrow. Time to practice will be provided. Equipment will be provided by the Ohio Division of Wildlife. Cost is $7, $10 for a pair of residents, $12 non-residents. Call 937-427-5514 for more information.

Bucs in Flyin’ to the Hoop

DAYTON — Tournament officials announced Oct. 10 that Xenia High will be among the area and national teams participating in the annual Flyin’ to the Hoop Invitational basketball showcase event.

The Buccaneers are scheduled to play Olentangy Liberty at 1:15 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13 at James S. Trent Arena, in Kettering.

Jump Start basketball offered

BEAVERCREEK — City of Beavercreek Parks and Recreation in cooperation with Jump Start Sports is offering a basketball program for children. Jump Start Basketball is an instructional and recreational basketball program designed for children in Pre-Kindergarten & Kindergarten, and grades 1-2. The goal of this program is to pique each child’s curiosity, to get kids excited about playing basketball and to teach good basic fundamentals at the same time.

The workshop will be held, Nov. 6 through Dec. 11. Times for Little Hoops Stars – pre-kindergarten (minimum age 4), from 5:30-6:30 p.m.; Hoop Stars – Grades 1-2 are 6:30-7:30 p.m. at Shaw Elementary, 3560 Kemp Road. Norman up for Athlete of the Year

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Grace Norman, of Jamestown, has been named a national finalist for Female Paralympic Athlete of the Year, by the United States Olympic Committee, it was announced Oct. 17.

Norman is one of five national finalists for Female Paralympic Athlete of the Year. She hasn’t lost an international paratriathlon competition since March, 2016. Fans are invited to vote for their favorite athletes and teams at TeamUSA.org/Awards through midnight Monday, Oct. 30.

The six award winners will be announced during the 2017 Team USA Awards presented by Dow, Best of the Year, to be held Nov. 29 at Royce Hall in Los Angeles. NBC will provide coverage of the awards show from 3-4 p.m. Eastern on Dec. 23.
