Four area winners in Week 1

GREENE COUNTY — Four of the seven Greene County-area high school football teams claimed wins last week.

Beavercreek, Carroll, Fairborn and Greeneview each won their Week 1 matchups, while Bellbrook Cedarville and Xenia lost.

This week has Xenia playing its second consecutive Thursday night game (this time they’re at Troy), and there are two games pitting Greene County foes against each other.

Beavercreek plays its second Greene County foe when it travels across U.S. 35 to take on Carroll; and Fairborn heads south to play Bellbrook.

Greeneview is also on the road this week, while Cedarville stays at home.

TOP PERFORMERS

Kaden Wenger, Running Back, Beavercreek — In 30 carries, the Beavers senior averaged 7.8 yards a haul to gain 235 yards in a win over Xenia. Wenger had TD runs of 4 and 16 yards as well.

Stevie Llanas, Linebacker/Running Back, Beavercreek — Llanas, a 5-foot-9, 245-pound defensive lineman, recorded eight tackles — including a sack and a half — against Xenia. He also plunged in from a yard out to score an offensive touchdown for the Beavers.

Nick Clevenger, Quarterback, Greeneview — The 6-foot, 195-pound junior completed 6-of-8 passes for 156 yards while rushing for 53 yards. He passed for a TD and ran in another in Greeneview’s 31-0 home win over Arcanum.

Griffin Mangan, Running Back, Greeneview — Mangan unofficially gained 93 yards on 11 carries for the Rams. He also snagged a pass from Nick Clevenger (see above) for 33 yards.

Jelani Tucker, Defensive Back, Xenia — The Buccaneer’s senior DB picked off two Beavercreek passes, and returned one for a touchdown in a Thursday night loss.

Hasan Akinyele and Antonio Olvera, Linebackers, Xenia — The two Xenia seniors each registered 18 tackles in the loss to Beavercreek, tops in the Greater Western Ohio Conference after Week 1. And senior nose guard Roman Johnson recorded 17 tackles.

K.J. Redmon, Running Back, Fairborn — The Skyhawks’ 6-foot, 195-pound senior rumbled for 155 yards and three touchdowns in a 32-26 home win over Tecumseh. Redmon also caught three passes for 54 yards.

Trevor Smith, Linebacker/Running Back, Fairborn — Smith leads the Greater Western Ohio Conference with three sacks. He returned three punts in the win over Tecumseh, rushed for 60 yards on eight carries, and caught a 15-yard pass.

Evan Howard, Running Back, Carroll — The 5-9, 180-pound senior back rushed for 180 yards on 33 carries in Carroll’s win over Riverside Stebbins. That number is tops in the Greater Catholic League Co-Ed ranks. Howard, Frederick Butts (two TDs), Trent Fox and Jacob Heil (one receiving TD) carried the ball a combined 50 times for 284 yards and three scores.
