Skyhawk girls fall in opener

KETTERING — The Fairmont Firebirds defeated the Skyhawks, 3-0, in Friday’s Aug. 18 season opener for both high schools. Fairmont managed to control the flow of the game, and out-shot Fairborn 15-2. Jenna Diehl, for the Skyhawks, had 12 saves over the course of the game.

Firebirds blank Fairborn

KETTERING — The Fairborn boy’s high school soccer team fell in their opening match Friday night to Fairmont, 3-0. Fairmont out-shot Fairborn 25-12. The Fairborn team played hard the entire game and created some offensive opportunities. They look forward to their opening home match Tuesday, Aug. 22 against Vandalia Butler.

Golden Eagles sweep Fairmont

BELLBROOK — Bellbrook claimed a 5-0 win over Kettering Fairmont, Friday Aug. 18 in girls high school tennis.

SINGLES — 1. Szep def. Jones 6-1, 6-0; 2. Foster def. Taphorn 6-2, 6-2; 3. Arora def. Turner 6-4, 6-3.

DOUBLES — 1. Schultz/Buttery def. Hesse/Pacenta 6-7(8), 6-3, 6-0; 2. Tschantz/Leftwich def. Greene/West 6-1, 6-4.

Rams defeat Yellow Springs

JAMESTOWN — Greeneview defeated Yellow Springs, 25-13, 19-25, 25-15, 25-123 in the schools’ first girls high school volleyball match of the season.

Ashley Schloss led the Rams with eight kills. Caitlin Sweat bashed six kills and had five service aces to go with six digs. Bryce Ratliff dished out 15 assists and Allison Simpson had 11. Maddie Hines had four digs in the win.

In junior varsity action, Yellow Springs claimed a 25-20, 25-19 win.

Reds hosting College Weekend

CINCINNATI — Reds fans can show their school pride by purchasing a special ticket package to celebrate College Weekend on Aug. 25-27 at Great American Ball Park.

Each package includes an exclusive Reds cap branded with the school colors and logo of the fan’s choice. This year’s participating schools are: University of Cincinnati; Xavier University; Thomas More College; University of Dayton; University of Kentucky; and Northern Kentucky University (SOLD OUT)

Packages start as low as $15. A portion of each ticket sold will benefit a scholarship fund of the chosen school.

Reds hosting African American night

CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati Reds will host African American Community Night at Great American Ball Park 7:10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25, when they take on the Pittsburgh Pirates.

An exclusive “Dad Hat” party will be held in the Fioptics District, which includes a free Reds dad hat, a rooftop party deck with a deejay from WOSL-FM 100.3; one free beverage; and a general admission ticket in the Fioptics District, all for $20. “Sliding into Om” yoga Aug. 26

CINCINNATI — The annual “Sliding into Om” one-hour yoga session will be held at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 26 on the outfield grass at Great American Ball Park .

Sliding into Om, presented by St. Elizabeth Healthcare, features instructors from The Yoga Bar and fans have two packages to choose from: $15 – Includes yoga on the field and a View Level ticket to the Aug. 27 Cincinnati Reds vs. Pittsburgh Pirates game (1:10 p.m.) with a special recognition to all yogis during the seventh inning stretch or $25 – Includes an exclusive Reds yoga mat plus all of the above

Registration and check-in will start at 7:45 a.m. with the yoga session beginning at 8:30 a.m. Ages 12 and younger may participate in the yoga event for free, if accompanied by a paying adult. Tickets available at reds.com/yoga.

Fall basketball league at Beavercreek

BEAVERCREEK — The Beavercreek High School girls basketball program will be hosting its 18th annual girls basketball fall league. The games will be played on Sunday afternoons Sept. 10 through Oct. 22. All teams will play seven games on five Sundays with no games Sept. 17-24.

The league will have 12 high school teams ninth through 12th grade. There will be 8-10 girls per team, with only two players from each school on the same team. HALO 5K Fun Run/Walk set

XENIA — The inaugural Helping Animals Lost & Orphaned (HALO) 5K Fun Run/Walk will be held 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 2 at Caesar Creek Vineyards LLC, 962 Long Road. Check-in and same-day registration will take place at 8:30 a.m.

Learn-To-Row class, Sept. 15-17

MORAINE — The Dayton Boat Club adult rowing program will host its learn-to-row class Friday through Sunday, Sept. 15-17, at the club’s boathouse on East River Road.

The three-session on-water class covers terminology, safety, stroke technique, equipment use and care, and sweep rowing in an eight-oared racing shell.

Sessions are 6-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15; 9-11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 16; and 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17. The course is $100 per person, which is deducted from a rower’s seasonal dues if he or she joins the novice team following the course. Each participant should wear comfortable but not loose-fitting exercise clothes and bring a water bottle, a pair of socks and a small towel. Museum offering Parker bobblehead

CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame & Museum’s 2017 bobblehead series, presented by Dinsmore & Shohl LLP, continues in August with Reds Hall of Famer Dave Parker.

One of the most intimidating hitters of his era, outfielder Dave “The Cobra” Parker became the first major free agent acquisition in Reds history when he was signed by the club in December of 1983. Over the next four seasons, Parker was a fixture in the middle of the Reds lineup.

The Reds Most Valuable Player each season from 1984–86, Parker was also a two-time NL All-Star, a two-time Sporting News All-Star and winner of two Silver Slugger Awards during his Reds career. Parker finished second in voting for league MVP honors in 1985 and ranked fifth in the MVP vote in 1986. A longtime resident of Cincinnati and currently an instructor at the P&G Cincinnati MLB Youth Academy in Roselawn, Parker was inducted into the Reds Hall of Fame in 2014.

The bobbleheads are free with regular-price admission to the Reds Hall of Fame beginning Aug. 4 and will be available Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays throughout the month of August, while supplies last.

Ultimate Spring Training Experience Raffle

CINCINNATI — The Reds Community Fund is offering fans the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets to win the Reds Ultimate Spring Training Experience.

Two prizes will be awarded and each includes a VIP experience for two at the Reds Spring Training facility in Goodyear, Ariz. The deadline to purchase raffle tickets is Sunday, Sept. 24 at the end of the Reds vs. Red Sox game. The two winners will be notified on Monday, Sept. 25. Only 1,000 tickets will be sold. Must be 18 years of age or older to purchase raffle tickets.
