Skyhawks stung by Sidney

FAIRBORN — Despite solid play, host Fairborn’s girls varsity soccer team lost Tuesday’s Aug. 8 scrimmage by a 3-0 score to the Sidney Yellow Jackets.

Fairborn goalie Jenna Diehl deflected one Sidney penalty shot away, but the powerful Yellow Jackets claimed two second-half scores to claim the win.

Fairborn’s pre-season record is now 1-1, with 4 goals for and 4 goals against.

The Lady Skyhawks will be back in action in a preview match against the Alumni, at 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12 at FHS Soccer Stadium.

Fairborn defeats Middletown

FAIRBORN — Lauren Thomas recorded a hat trick, and Abby Knaub also knocked in a goal, during a season opening girls high school soccer scrimmage contest against visiting Middletown. Fairborn won the Monday, Aug. 7 scrimmage, 4-1.

Aubree Duncan and Hannah Baumgardner were credited with assists for the Skyhawks. Middletown scored on a late-game penalty kick.

Defensively for Fairborn, Abbi Newell and Jenna Diehl tended the goal, while Hannah Johnson, Isabella Carone and Lauren Murry managed to minimize the threat of the Middies’ attacks.

Gathering of the Geezers at Kil-Kare

XENIA — The annual Gathering of the Geezers, old-time drag races, car show, hall of fame awards, and swap meet will take place Aug. 19 at Kil-Kare Dragway, 1166 Dayton-Xenia Road. Gates open at 9 a.m. Time runs start at 10 a.m. with racing set to begin at 3 p.m. Tech is closed at 2 p.m.

Cost is $15 for spectators. Kids 12 and under get in free. Entry fee is $25 to participate in the drag races, swap meet or the car show. Call Ed Crowder at 937-409-3087 for more information.

Fall basketball league at Beavercreek

BEAVERCREEK — The Beavercreek High School girls basketball program will be hosting its 18th annual girls basketball fall league. The games will be played on Sunday afternoons Sept. 10 through Oct. 22. All teams will play seven games on five Sundays with no games Sept. 17-24.

The league will have 12 high school teams ninth through 12th grade. There will be 8-10 girls per team, with only two players from each school on the same team. Buddies program returns

DAYTON — The Dayton Dragons Kroger Baseball Buddy program is back for the 2017 season. Kids 7-13 can enter for a chance to run onto Fifth Third Field alongside the Dragons players.

The experience includes: Hanging out in the dugout during pre-game to meet the Dragons players; Getting autographs and photos with the Dragons team; Being introduced over the PA like a player; Running out on the field with the team before that day’s game. Baseball Buddies will also receive several gifts including a replica Dragons jersey, a Dragons baseball hat, a drawstring backpack, and Dragons pen and baseball to be autographed. One baseball buddy will win a free fun day at Fifth Third Field with 20 of their friends and Dragons players. To enter, look for the display at local Kroger stores.

Dragons hosting Movie Night

DAYTON — The Dayton Dragons are hosting Donatos Family Movie Night on Saturday, Aug. 19 with a showing of “Trolls” (rated PG) on the 2,000-square-foot HD video board at Fifth Third Field. The gates for the event open at 6 p.m. and the movie will begin at 8 p.m. Families are invited to bring a blanket and find a spot on the stadium’s outfield grass and enjoy a night of fun at the ballpark.

Groups are advised to arrive early to secure a great spot in the outfield grass and also to enjoy the festivities before the movie begins. Children will get to meet Dragons mascots Heater and Gem, enjoy inflatable games, participate in skits with the Green Team and eat ballpark food.

Reds hosting African American c0mmunity night

CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati Reds will host African American Community Night at Great American Ball Park 7:10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25, when they take on the Pittsburgh Pirates.

An exclusive “Dad Hat” party will be held in the Fioptics District, which includes a free Reds dad hat, a rooftop party deck with a deejay from WOSL-FM 100.3; one free beverage; and a general admission ticket in the Fioptics District, all for $20. Reds Museum offering Parker bobblehead

CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame & Museum’s 2017 bobblehead series, presented by Dinsmore & Shohl LLP, continues in August with Reds Hall of Famer Dave Parker.

One of the most intimidating hitters of his era, outfielder Dave “The Cobra” Parker became the first major free agent acquisition in Reds history when he was signed by the club in December of 1983. Over the next four seasons, Parker was a fixture in the middle of the Reds lineup. The Reds Most Valuable Player each season from 1984–86, Parker was also a two-time NL All-Star, a two-time Sporting News All-Star and winner of two Silver Slugger Awards during his Reds career. Parker finished second in voting for league MVP honors in 1985 and ranked fifth in the MVP vote in 1986. A longtime resident of Cincinnati and currently an instructor at the P&G Cincinnati MLB Youth Academy in Roselawn, Parker was inducted into the Reds Hall of Fame in 2014.

The bobbleheads are free with regular-price admission to the Reds Hall of Fame beginning Aug. 4 and will be available Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays throughout the month of August, while supplies last.
