Regional Champs back at it

BEAVERCREEK — Dust has barely had any time to collect on the team’s 2016 Division I regional championship trophy, but the Beavercreek Beavers boys varsity high school soccer team was on the pitch to take on visiting Cincinnati St. Xavier in the first scrimmage of the season for both schools, Tuesday Aug. 8 at Beavercreek’s Frank Zink Field.

Led by Greater Western Ohio Conference, National East Coach of the Year John Guiliano, Beavercreek won the GWOC National East division, then rolled through the regular season to a No. 5 state ranking among OHSAA Division I schools. The Beavers advanced through the postseason to the state semifinals, before losing 2-1 to eventual state runner-up Columbus St. Charles, a team that handed Beavercreek (19-2-1) its only two losses of the season.

Led by first-team All-GWOC selection Dominic Calabrese, a senior who had 15 goals and 14 assists last season, with National East first-team senior midfielder Ryan Bernt, and honorable mention division selections Daniel Donohue and Joshua Flick, the Beavers should be strong again this season.

Beavercreek led the Tuesday night contest by a 2-0 score at halftime.

The 2017 boys high school varsity soccer regular season officially gets under way on Aug. 18.
