XENIA — Sixteen Greene County area kids chased down several surprised calves and nabbed the prized tag to win themselves some cash, during Sunday’s July 30 Kiddie Calf Scramble event at the Greene County Fair.

A total of 96 kids in all, competed in their respective age groups. In each contest, groups of 20-25 kids would line up on the west end of the Chip Noble Memorial Racetrack behind a white line. Handlers would release four calves from a pen at the opposite end of the enclosed area. Each calf had a tag that was gently affixed to their back, and the first kids to nab the tags and return with the tags to a large circle in the center of the enclosure were the winners.

It was not disclosed the exact amount that was awarded to each winner, but the cash was handed out in descending order to each winner, depending on how soon they arrived at the white circle. Rumors that several of the kids then ran out and bought Ferraris are highly exaggerated.

Krista Dunn was the fleetest of foot in the 9 year old division, claiming first place out of 21 contestants. Carson Bone, Trevor Moore and Madelyn Rector finished second, third and fourth respectively.

In the 10 year old competition, it was Blake Midlam claiming first prize followed by T.J. Stinson, Sydney Hawkins and Gavin Hardacre. There were 24 contestants in the 10 year old scramble.

The cows who were the targets in Sunday’s 11-12 year old competition might still be running. Thee were 14 11-year-olds and 16 12-year-olds chasing those four calves. Gunnar Gannon was the first to nab a tag off a cow to claim first prize. Adam Cline, Gavin Dailey and Ben Lucas rounded out the list of prize winners.

In the 13 year old scramble, Matt Paris won the event, followed by Grace Strickland, Caleb Adlen and Sam Lewis.

Sixty seven sponsors helped put on the annual event, which is run by the Greene County Cattlemen’s Association. The Cattlemen also have a concession trailer on the fairgrounds. All profits from Fair Week will be spent on Junior Livestock sales to help support the Greene County area youth cattlemen.

The Kiddie Calves were secured for the event from Nick Anderson of Anderson Custom Raising.

John and Brenda Waller supplied the water truck that ensured that Sunday’s contestants would have slippery time of racing through the muddied track.
