CEDARVILLE — NCAA track national champions Carsyn Koch and Daniel Michalski are the 2016-17 Yellow Jacket Club Athletes of the Year.

The two were selected in a vote conducted by the CU head coaches.

Koch, a junior from Washburn, Maine, is the Female Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive time. She repeated as the Division II 800-meter national champion both indoors and outdoors, and was an indoor All-American in the distance medley relay.

Koch was the USTFCCCA Division II Midwest Region Women’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Year as well as the Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year.

Besides winning her national titles, she posted the fastest indoor and outdoor 800 meter times in the country in DII as well as the fastest outdoor 1,500 meter mark.

Koch competed in the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 800 meters. She has also been recognized for academic achievements by the USTFCCCA, CoSIDA, NCCAA, and the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC).

Michalski, a junior from Xenia, was the NCAA Division II champion in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a school record time of 8:44.49.

He was also a DII indoor All-American in both the mile and the distance medley relay.

Michalski was the G-MAC indoor champion in the 800 meters and the mile with meet records in both events. He was the G-MAC outdoor champ in the 800 with another meet record to go along with a win in the 1,500.

A total of 64 senior student-athletes, cheerleaders, and athletic trainers were recognized at the annual Athletic Department Honors and Appreciation Banquet on April 20. Besides the announcement of the Yellow Jacket Athletes of the Year, student-athletes were commended in the following four major award categories:

Pete and Joyce Reese Award — Olivia Esbenshade, a women’s cross country and track performer from Marietta, Pa.; Taylor Holt, a men’s golfer from Dayton; and Joel Twinem, a men’s soccer player from Aylmer, Ontario.

Don and Nedra Callan Sports Ministry Award — Abby Shelton, a senior volleyball player from Sparta, Ga., repeated as the women’s recipient while the men’s selection was John Schwien, a men’s soccer player from Garnet Valley, Pa.

Dr. and Mrs. Duane Wood Family Award — Koch, a junior track and cross country standout from Washburn, Maine, and Colton Potter, a junior baseball player from Jersey Shore, Pa.

Dave Jones Memorial Soccer Award — Jocelyn Quirple, a sophomore from Hagerstown, Md., and Derek Braak, a sophomore from Grand Haven, Mich.
