Yellow Jackets strong in Hanover track meet

HANOVER, Ind. — The Cedarville University women’s and men’s track and field teams finished first and second in their respective meets Saturday, April 1 at the Hanover Invitational.

Carsyn Koch was part of three meet records, and Nicole Perez set another, as the Lady Jackets claimed the team championship at the Hanover Invitational on Saturday, April 1.

Koch won the 800- and 1,500- meter races, plus was part of the winning 1,600-meter relay squad. Perez cruised to victory in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Koch led a 1-thru-4 CU finish in both the 800 (2:09.72) and 1,500 (4:32.29). The marks met the NCAA Division II provisional standard in both events.

Her winning time in the 1,500 took more than 15 seconds off of the previous meet record and rates eighth all-time at CU. She shaved more than 9 seconds from the 800 invitational mark with the 10th-fastest performance in school history.

Koch was joined by Olivia Esbenshade, Christy Jesson, and Sarah Hoffman to win the 1,600 relay in 3:55.78 for another meet record. Their time ranks No. 10 at Cedarville.

Perez won the steeplechase in 11:13.80 to take a more than 31 seconds off of the previous best invitational standard. Additionally, it was her personal best by more than 11 seconds.

Grace Norman ran to the victory in the 5,000 meters in 18:17.14, her first college victory for the Rio Paralympics gold and bronze medalist. Norman’s time was 30 seconds better than her previous best time in the event. Courtney Kohler took first in the javelin with a heave of 115 feet, 7 inches (35.22 meters).

The Lady Jackets racked up 164 points to win the 15-team event. Indiana Wesleyan was the runner-up with 148 points and Taylor had 99.

Michalski sets two meet records, men second

HANOVER, Ind. – Daniel Michalski set a pair of meet records to lead the Cedarville men’s track and field team to a runner-up team finish at the Hanover Invitational.

He ran the fourth-fastest time in Yellow Jacket history in the 3,000-meter steeple chase in 9:03.00, to break the meet record by more than 22 seconds. It also met the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying standard.

Michalski, of Xenia, set another meet record with a win in the 800 meters in 1:54.74.

The 400-meter relay squad of Matthew Bird, Josh Boxer, Wade Kyser and Josiah Bernard sprinted to victory in 43.21 seconds.

Kevin Knox was a winner in the javelin with a toss of 178-6 (54.40 meters).

The 1,600-meter relay foursome of Bernard, Bird, Tim De Jong, and Bryan Perschbacher was the runner-up in 3:23.09.

Wyatt Hartman took runner-up honors in the 1,500 with a time of 3:59.11.

Indiana Wesleyan won the 16-team meet with 148 points. Cedarville totaled 130.50 and Thomas More was next with 76.50.

“Our men’s and women’s teams did very well today with many outstanding performances. We set several stadium records in the process of the women’s win and the men’s second place finish,” said Yellow Jackets head coach Jeff Bolender. “Many of our athletes set personal bests, which is excellent this early in the season, and we had a few NCAA D-II provisional marks. … Overall, I was very proud of our teams. I thank the Lord for the blessings of safe travel and so many wonderful marks.”

Cedarville’s track team will compete next at 11 a.m. Friday, April 7 at the Marian (Ind.) Open.
